Grant and I strode up to Tess and Marco, looking as determined as possible. Marco glanced our way, then did a double take when he saw we were heading for him. He tensed, and when he pointed us out to Tess, she tensed too. Part of me worried they'd take off before we ever reached them, but luckily, they didn't.
"Marco and Tess?" asked Grant once we got within hearing distance. Marco narrowed his eyes.
"Who's asking?"
"My name's Mark, and this is my girlfriend, Isabella. A friend of ours suggested we come see you. We're... big fans of your movement."
Grant leaned in a little bit as he said the last part, a more obvious hint than a trained SHIELD agent would give. Marco and Tess shared a suspicious glance, but looked a little less ready to bolt.
"...Who's the friend?" asked Tess.
"Cole Matthews," I replied, not missing a beat. Her eyebrows rose, and I bit back a smirk.
"Cole Matthews told you to come see us?" she asked. I nodded, and she and Marco shared another look. They nodded to each other, then Marco cleared his throat and turned back to us.
"Why don't we all grab a seat, somewhere it's not so loud?"
Grant nodded, and the four of us moved to a booth at the far back of the room. We found one free of coats, bags, or other items people didn't want to hold on the dance floor and slid into it, Tess and Marco on one side with Grant and I on the other. It still wasn't quiet by any means, but we'd be able to have a conversation without shouting.
"So what do you think you can do for us?" asked Tess, leaning forward with her hands clasped together. "Are you hackers?"
I shook my head, and Grant spoke up.
"No. But we have..." He glanced at me. "other skills."
Marco raised an eyebrow.
"Like what?"
I sighed. "Look, we met Cole on accident, but we helped him get out of a sticky situation with some people who were after him. We can fight, we can sneak, and we're good at getting out of tight spots, or helping other people do the same. I wish we could offer hacking skills to the cause, but we also figure you're good on that front already."
"And why are you so interested in this?" asked Marco. "We usually don't, like, hold meetings or whatever. Most of our work is just done under the banner of a common ideal. Virtually."
I looked over at Grant, sharing a significant look with him for Tess and Marco's sake. We both knew talking and persuading were more my strong suit, so when I turned away from Grant, I leaned even further forward across the table and lowered my voice.
"We're sick of the secret keeping," I said. "At every level. Information should be free and available, period. I wish I could grab a laptop and start doing something about it the way you guys do, but I can't. Neither of us can. So, we figured this is the next best thing."
