The next day after school, Alison walked back home with Spencer. The sun was hidden behind a cloud and its rays around it. The composition reminded her of hope. How being with her friends for a few hours made the rest of the day bearable. "We should totally have a sleepover tomorrow."
"Good idea. My house?"
"That's why I told you first." Ali winked.
Spencer shook her head lightly, snickering. "Okay, I'll check in with my parents. They'll most likely say yes."
"Cool. If so, send a group message so everyone can get permission."
"Will do. Talk to you later."
"Bye." Alison waved and then made her way over to her house. She heard yelling through the door. Her dad and Jason. She considered staying on her porch, wait for one of them to end the argument. But she knew they could go on for hours. In fact, they probably started fighting when her father got home.
"Do you really want me to say it again?" Kenneth said. "No. Pot. In. The. House."
"Dude, I'm in college."
"Then get high in college!"
"You want me to be expelled?"
"I want you out. Get a dorm or something. But I don't want you here!"
Ali closed the front door and saw her dad and Jason on the living room, their backs to her. She ran as quietly as she could to her room. No way she was being dragged on the middle of that.
She considered reading her book for English like she had tried on Tuesday, but she could still hear them. She groaned. Where was her mom so she could step in?
An hour later, her question wasn't answered, but Jessica did finally come home as Alison got a group message. Yes! she thought as she read Spencer announcing the sleepover. Count me in, she replied, not really needing permission since her house was next door.
Ali stood up and did a little dance, not noticing she was by her window until she heard a laugh and stopped to look out. Spencer's room was in front of hers so they could always see each other if the opportunity was given. Like this one.
Spencer had changed out of her usual preppy clothes to more comfy ones and had her dark brown hair tied on a ponytail, her cellphone on her hand.
Alison didn't care if Spencer had caught her in the middle of an embarrassing moment--well, could Ali actually be embarrassing? She threw her hands in the air. "Whoop!"
Spencer laughed again, mimicking her actions.
That's right, Ali was still cool.

On Friday night, Alison and Emily were on Spencer's bedroom. They were the first ones to arrive since Ali lived really close and Emily was always on the time set. Spencer was setting up the living room, refusing her friends' offer to help her-she was the host after all.
Alison was sat on the bed as Emily walked around. She grabbed a flashlight from Spencer's bedside table. "Why do you think Spence has this so close?"
"Oh, we communicate with it at night. I have one in my drawer."
"Communicate?"
"Yeah, with like, signals. We used it when phone curfew was a thing. One flash means, I can't sleep, can you? Two blinks means, Good night. And three, We need to sneak out and talk in person."
"Wow."
"We were really creative," Ali joked and as Emily put the flashlight back in its place, the doorbell rang. "Should be the girls. Let's go."
