Asher

While I scarf down my scalding toast I think about how Alice dyed her hair. The color looks so unnatural but maybe that's because I see her as the picture of innocence and reddish-brown hair isn't really innocent.

Even though I know she doesn't have a crush on me, I like her. It's hard for me to admit that but I realize now that I shouldn't hide the truth from myself. Maybe I don't like her as a girlfriend, maybe it can stay as a sister, for now.

It doesn't take me long to get ready. All I do is throw on a pair of jeans, t-shirt, and some sneakers to finish. Once I'm put together I make my way down to the truck. Upon seeing that London isn't there yet, I hop in and check the time to see that I'm actually fifteen minutes early and London isn't running late. I must be really eager to see Ali's new hair in person. Speaking of which, I get out my phone and type a quick greeting.

"Hey, ginger butt!" I text her

She replies almost instantly "Shut up!" I chuckle to myself as I imagine her face twisting up angrily at me.

"Can't wait to see you! Gotta go now!" I conclude our brief conversation as London comes to the truck.

We drive silently, each caught in our own thoughts. When the school comes in to view I'm already unlatching my seatbelt, preparing to run. London hasn't even stopped the truck when I get out.

I sprint to Alice's locker, hoping she is there. While I get closer I slow down a bit, looking at her from behind. The dye isn't too bad, it actually looks really good. Her natural curls have a red sheen to them now that lights up her skin tone. The color looks mostly brown than anything but the red is still there. I still wonder why she dyed her hair in the first place since her natural color was just as beautiful.

Just to mess with her I put on my best 'you-look-ugly' face and tap on her shoulder as I press my own shoulder into the locker next to her to prop myself up. "You look so rachet!" I scoff at her with my upturned nose.

"I know! I don't need you to tell me!"Alice squeals reaching into her bag for a deep purple beanie which she pulls over the top of her head to mask some of the long curls. The color of the knit hat clashes with her hair so I reach over and yank it off her head. She scowls up at me as I pat her hair back into place.

"I was joking with you, sweetheart." I say with a softer tone "You look great, to be honest."

"Thank you, but just because you are my friend doesn't mean you have to lie to make me feel better about my mistakes." She scoffs

"No, no , no! Your hair looks amazing." I plead with her beliefs about herself but I am met with a brick wall.

"Don't, please." She sighs, slamming her locker and walking past me to go into the classroom.

Somehow she managed to make me a little sadder, so as I walk into first period my shoulders are slumped with the weight of sadness. The guys compliment Alice on her hair and are talking about doing something tonight after school. Our conversation is interrupted by the bell that starts class and we don't get to talk about it until lunch.

The cafeteria is roaring like usual but this time it seems just a tad quieter than usual. Maybe it's because of the fact it's raining.

"I think we should go bowling!" Brady confesses his idea for tonight

"No," I quickly nix the proposition

"How about the movies? There is a great new action movie that just came out I'm sure you guys would love it." Adam says, getting all of us excited, except for Alice.
