I felt my phone vibrating and I picked it up without even checking the name of whom was calling.
"Hello?" I answered when I picked up and it was followed by recessive squealing. Yeah, that was Natalie.
"Kate! I'm engaged!" She spit out in a high pitched voice. I felt my mind turn to dust.
"Engaged?" I asked as if I didn't hear her the first time, and I hoped I heard it wrong. "As in getting married?"
"Yes! Liam asked me to marry him," she replied suddenly a bit more collected as I knew her all the time. Sometimes I panic when she gets jumpy, I'm just not used to that. I felt my body sting over her news. I was just leaving NYC to live at college with her, I was leaving my boyfriend, actually not leaving, I broke up with him. I felt shock over her news, it was almost a put down. Louis was my first boyfriend, and I ended our relationship a few weeks ago, despite the fact that I thought I loved him.
"Wow," I said and tried to think of something to add but I couldn't think, it was so much to take. "Engaged," I repeated and I knew she was smiling on her end if the phone.
"Isn't it wonderful? He asked me downtown too," Natalie added and I moved a pile of papers off of my desk. She happened to call me they day I ended my summer job. I cant believe I am going to college this fall... With Natalie.
"It is wonderful," I said to Natalie, picturing her crying as she accepted his ring. In a way, it made me happy knowing that she was happy. She deserved this.
Natalie was my only tight friend from my childhood, Liam as well so they had been around me quite sometime. I dated Louis for basically forever. He was my best friend besides Natalie, but somehow I can easily set him aside in my mind.
"I called not only to tell you, but we will be having a huge dinner at a nice banquet hall to celebrate, I want you to be there," Natalie offered to me and I smiled.
"Of course I'll be there," I promised and I knew she was grinning.
"Coming to think of it, you'll be here soon and I'll give you the information then. It's going to be so exciting!" She exclaimed and I agreed.
"See you", I said, ending the call and putting my phone into my back pocket. I continued sorting out papers, hoping that it could keep my mind off the complicated reality that is my life.
