Alex had always been the lucky one. Privileged would be an understatement. 21 years old and prince of Glenfall, life could hardly get any better. He slept in late each morning on a plush comfy bed with plenty of pillows and covers to keep him warm in the winter and he went to bed late at night after having a feast with his mother and father in the thrown room.

Yes he had his duties but they were hardly a chore for the handsome, well dressed young man. On most days he would go out and hunt deers and hogs and whatever else he could find and on days where that wasn't the case he would roam around the castle grounds and the surrounding village, strutting off his good looks and high status.

To put things nicely, he was an ass.

Training was something of a fun exercise too. His father, King of Glenfall, had insisted that the boy train everyday since he was 5 years old and even before that he was handed a blunted sword told to practise. Alex was good. He was very good. Occasionally there would be the odd opponent who would catch him on a bad day and would beat him but they always ended up to serve by his side as one of his knights so it was hardly a bad thing that they too were good at fighting.

Everyone would admit that Alex had a perfect life. He was good looking, rich to say the least, held good status, people(well, some people) liked him, especially the girls but Alex wasn't content with his life. He was bored. To everyone else it looked as if he was having fun but his life lacked a certain type of excitement.

He wanted to take risks and live on the edge but anyone who he tried to do something like that with would flat out refuse in fear that he was just going to get them in trouble if he got caught. He would never do that because for all Alex was, he wasn't a snitch or a liar.

Glenfall hardly ever came under attack, in fact it hadn't really been threatened by anyone properly since Peter Gaskarth and claimed the kingdom for himself, slaughtering anyone else who came into his path of success.

Alex hadn't yet been born by that point but what he did know was that that battle had lasted for more than a few weeks but his father had come out on top of it all. He was proud to say the least.

Alex always did all he could to get his father to feel the same way about him;proud, but his father never really showed any recognition of anything he did. Alex would win tournament and jousting competition and bring back the biggest kill of the day but Peter would simply shake his hand and say nothing more about the matter. It upset him more than he'd like to admit.

Jack Barakat was quite the opposite. He had grown up in a poor family living in a small village on the outskirts of the kingdom ruled by the Gaskarth household. He often went to bed hungry and woke up with the exact same feeling of emptiness in his stomach.

He wasn't sad though, he was far from it and he'd lived a very happy childhood playing hide and seek in the surrounding forest with his younger sister may and the other boys and girls in the village but now at 20 years old, Jack decided it was time to flee the nest and make his own way in life rather than depend on his mum any longer. They were poor enough as it was without having to find the food to feed him.

Jack loved his mum and she loved him back with all that she had. Joyce had taught Jack everything he knew from how to light a fire to how to bandage a wound properly and how to cook(not very well). He hated to leave her behind as he went on his way but knew that she was proud of him no matter what and would always be there for him to come back to if things didn't work out the way he intended.

Jack had spent a lot of time debating what it was that he wanted to do in life. There wasn't many opportunities for poor men like him but he had dreamt for so long of becoming a physician in the royal household and lucky for him, his mother knew the kings physicians father from many many years ago and that's how Jack ended up with only an old bag slung over his shoulder making his way alone to Glenfall.

He had a mixture of emotions as he went; nervous; remorseful; sad, but most of all, he was excited by this new prospect of life that Genfall would offer him.
