AS soon as Amal and Janiorce touched down on the forbidden planet, the former requested that the latter light their way. Janiorce blinked and half of his eyes turned to a yellow that glowed some, just enough to light their way.For the first half of this mission, the two needed to be as quiet as humanely possible and hide their identity. That meant just enough light where they wouldn't be tripping over one another, and raggedy brown shawls that covered their mouth and nose.
The Shadow didn't need anything to survive. No food, no shelter, just... darkness. The only buildings that remained on the desolate planet were barely even buildings. Instead they were walls completely made out of shadows, a continuous wisp of blackness that was obviously used to hold prisoners who got in their way.
"There's only a few Shadow Shells left," Amal sighed, referring to the prisons. "Damn it."
"Then that's a few more chances it could be your girlfriend! We get closer and closer everyday, cap'n,"the young boy cheered. Amal remembered when she had been as optimistic as him, but for some reason this was draining everything from her.
She knew she was failing Pidge.
Hours went by as the unordinary duo checked the next four Shadow Shells, to no avail. The Paladins of Voltron and their friends were nowhere to be found. "One more left," Janiorce tried to smile for Amal, but it wavered greatly. He was just a kid after all, and even they ran out of strength from time to time.
He closed his eyes tiredly, and when they opened to face the last Shadow Shell of the day, the irises turning an icy blue. Amal felt her heart clench for her little friend, his sadness finally taking over her heart. Maybe she shouldn't of taken him in after all.
She placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezing lightly. "25th time the charm, huh?"
Janiorce nodded in confirmation, and fixed his eyes on the prison as if he was a bull ready to charge. They took one another's hand, and ran towards the box of swirling shadows. It was the only way to get in without starting Phase Two, unfortunately.
They both shouted as they made impact with the wall, the coldness of the shadows smacking their flesh. The Shadow would probably have growled if it had a voice, and it swallowed the two whole into its small prison.
The Shadow Shell made a perfect square, but it seemed to go on forever due to the darkness that engulfed them. It was completely silent in the torturous cell, causing Amal to halfheartedly order Janiorce to, "Light it up!"
Although the color of Janiorce's eyes were solely based on his emotions, he was such an outstanding person that once in a while he was able to change the color to whatever he pleased. They used his skills to their advantage by having his eight eyes shine a sharp yellow to substitute for the flashlights that would provoke The Shadow.
Amal gasped loudly at the sight she found in front her, and Janiorce began bouncing in place happily.
Seven people lay on the ground in front of her. Some were on their backs staring up at the ceiling (aka shadows) with glazed eyes, some rest on their knees, and others were testing themselves to see how many different positions they could manage in order to pass the time.
Everyone sat up as soon as Janiorce lit up the Shadow Shell, their eyes snapping to the two young warriors. Amal looked at each of the bloody and wounded survivers.
She immediately recognized Lance and Hunk. She had visited Pidge at the Garrison once a week, and the two boys would often come and converse with the couple.
Lance sat in a corner of the Shadow Shell, his eyes dark and begging for sleep. A cracked communicator was gripped tightly in his hands, which Amal found odd. Hunk sat criss-cross in the middle of the Shadow Shell, his Paladin Armor torn and destroyed just like the other's.
Amal's eyes darted to the small head Hunk was cradling protectively, and tears fell from her face with no hesitation when she saw Pidge lying limp.
A whole sleeve was torn from the Green Paladin's armor, her bare arm exposed. Hunk's orange headband was wrapped tightly around it, soaked it blood and rendered useless despite it's best efforts. Her left eye was bruised badly, and her face was paler than Amal could have ever imagined.
Amal took slow steps towards her girlfriend, and dropped harshly to her knees next to Hunk's lap. They all let her approach, knowing exactly who she was and why she was here. No one dare spoke a word, except Amal.
"Ka–Katie? I came for you, l–like I promised."
Amal's lip quivered as a heavy sob escaped her mouth, and the other people began stirring. Hunk placed an empathetic hand on her shoulder which only caused her tears to flow harder, and he pulled away.
Amal grabbed Pidge's wrists, dragging her girlfriend to her lap as delicately as possible in her heartbroken state. She grabbed Pidge's naked hand roughly, drawing it to her chest, and closed her eyes painfully.
Everyone stood still.
"Are they letting you act like I'm dead?" The strained voice of an angel came along with the squeeze of a hand. Amal's eyes snapped open to find the sparkling hazel eyes of her girlfriend staring back at her. A pained smiled graced her lips, but it was a smile nonetheless. "I told you I didn't want you stealing any Garrison ships."
"A–And I said too ba–ad," Amal stuttered, tears still streaming down her cheeks. They were a different kind of tears, ones that signified that her mission had been completed. Pidge smiled lovingly, her eyes watering up with so many emotions Janiorce probably wouldn't be able to register it.
Amal laughed, leaning down so Pidge didn't have to lean up. Amal kissed Pidge over and over again, leaving little pecks of love on every surface of her face. On her forehead, cheeks, temples, nose, her bruised eye, and even her neck.
Pidge giggled happily, finally sealing the deal by using her strength to pull Amal closer.
The two's lips locked with a passion, and Amal felt the fire in her burn bright once again. The kiss was slow, one that needed to be felt as the pair finally gained back their sanity. When it had ended, Amal laid her head on Pidge's chest, crying a little more.
Pidge did the same, whispering sweet nothings until they had both calmed down.
