8:35am my phone read and no one was at the sandlot. I knew it was to good to be true, that Benny kid seemed like the kid that was never late when it came to baseball.

"It has to be a set up." I thought. I start to grab my stuff and stand up to leave when I read someone running. I turn around to see Benny racing into the sandlot with a bat, two gloves, and a baseball.

"Hey sorry I'm late I couldn't find my other glove." He said.

"Oh it's fine." I said trying to play it cool and not be awkward.

"You can run really fast." I said.

"Thanks people don't call me The Jet for nothing." He said smiling.

"The Jet?"

"Yeah it's a nickname I got last year for out running The Beast."

"What's a beast?" I said still confused.

"It's this monster dog that lives in the junk yard behind the fence." He said pointing to the fence.

"Oh okay."

"Benny."

"Oh okay Benny." I said smiling.

"So you have never played baseball before?" Benny asked.

"Never in my 15 years of living." I said.

"Well then we will just start with the basics." He said grabbing a glove for me.

The time flew by fast and I felt like I learned everything I needed to know about baseball. Benny taught me how to catch, pitch, slide into home, steal a base, hit, throw, and he told me the rules. I still need help with hitting the ball but I can throw a mean curve ball. Soon I started to hear other people coming into the sandlot. Benny went over to the boys and I went to the dugout to grab some water.

I could tell the other boys weren't to happy to have me playing with them. As they talked to Benny they kept glancing back at me and whispering stuff to him. I started to think it was a bad idea for me to come here. I looked over at the group again and saw them walking toward me.

"Guys this is Teagan Adams. Teagan this is Timmy and Tommy Timmons, Mike "Squints" Palledorous, Alan McClellan we call him Yeah-Yeah, Bertram Grover Weeks, Kenny DeNunez, and Hamilton Porter we call him Ham, and Scott Smalls we call him Smalls". After every name was called that person would spit, it looked gross but I guess they wanted to seem tough.

"Teagan is going to be playing with us today. I showed her some skills so we can start now." Benny said.

The boys just walked away mumbling. I guess Benny saw the look on my face because he came over and whispered to me.

"Just do what I showed you and they won't have any problem with you." He said smiling.

I walked over to short stop and waited for everyone to get ready. Soon the first ball was hit and the game began. There was no way nothing could get between me and the game I was ready to play. To say the least, at the end of the game the boys had no problem talking to me. I think this was the most fun I had in years.

Me and Benny were the last ones in the group when we walked home. He just got done talking with Smalls and now it was just silent. I didn't mind it, it gave me a calm feeling. I started to walk in the direction of my house when I heard Benny say my name.

"You coming to the sandlot tomorrow?"

"You'll just have to wait and see." I said closing my front door.
