"Ja...Ja...Jack." I said proudly.
"Mum! Did you hear that?" Jake yelled, grinning.
"Yes dear. That's very good Megan. Can you say anything else?" Mum smiled.
"Jake!"
She laughed and handed me to seven-year-old Jake.
"Wow, two and already talking. I'm so proud of you Megan."
"She's developing slowly, Jake. Most children start talking before their second birthday."
"Shush Mum, don't say that." Jake said spinning so I couldn't see Mum. "Good girl Megan."
***
"Jake! No fair!" I squealed as I ran away from him.
"How is it not fair?"
"You bigger then me." I laughed as he caught me and swung me in the air.
"Of course. I'm eight and you're only three."
"And three quarters!" I smiled proudly, flipping my fringe out of my face.
"Jake!" Dad shouted. "Why aren't you training?"
He stormed out of the house and plucked me from Jake's arms.
"Daddy." I protested.
"I told you not to go outside." He placed me inside firmly but gently. I pouted.
***
I cringed as Dad hit Jake with the stick.
"Megan darling. Come inside." Mum called.
I ran in and grabbed her hand.
"Don't like! Don't like!"
Mum placed me on the counter as she bustled around making dinner.
"Talk properly Megan."
"I don't like Jake and Daddy fighting." I said slowly.
She sighed and glanced out the kitchen window. "Neither do I but it's training."
"I don't like it Mum."
***
"Megan, please." Jake said angrily.
I peaked out from behind the couch.
"Hide and seek?" I asked.
"No, not hide and seek. It's bath time. You're supposed to behave." He grabbed me by the hand and took me to the bath.
"Why so grumpy?"
"You're five, Megan, talk properly."
I stared at the bubbles floating around me silently.
"Megan I'm sorry." He lifted my chin. "I don't like it when Mum and Dad aren't here. You need to stay close to me at all times."
"Why?"
"Okay?"
"Of course Jake." I smiled, adoringly.
***
"Happy birthday darling." Mum said planting a kiss on my cheek.
"I'm six." I said proudly to Dad.
