This is my first time writing, so please be kind and feel free to comment on what you thought about this book. Love& Peace ❤️In this small town outside of Boston, about only two miles square ft., surrounded by the sea is where I call home. A place I so desperately can't wait to get out of, its a town that the popular kids parents grew up and they married other popular people from the town and the breeding cycle continue. A town you walk into the local grocery store and know every person in there, such a boring town especially for a girl like me. You probably can guess right about now that I wasn't one of the popular girls nor were my parents from the town, which is why I had always felt like an outsider.
My mother did go to high school here in this town, but she wasn't from here and she didn't breed with someone from here so that essentially made my status a nobody in the eyes of my classmates. My father... well I don't know much about him except for the two photos I have of him, what I can tell you is that he's a loser or more so a coward, leaving my mother when I was just a baby so she can rise me on her own, and she did a hell of a job! In a few more weeks I will finally be leaving this town and going to the NYU, thank goodness because I would die if I didn't leave this boring town.
A phone call brings me out of my thoughts as I looked out the window of my bedroom, with the view of the ocean. " SHIT!" I said as I saw who was calling "Hello" I whispered in the phone pretending to be asleep "Princess, are you still sleeping" asked the lady in her sweet motherly voice. " Its 1pm in the afternoon, you were supposed to come over for breakfast to meet someone I know you will like a lot" she said sternly but still sweetly.
" I know Nana" I said feeling guilty that I totally forgot the promise I made my grandmother, "I can come over for lunch if the person is still there." I said I quickly tried to get dressed knowing the answer before she even said it, "Great! See you soon" she excitedly as she said her goodbye and hung up. I manage to get dressed at a record time of 10 mins, as I wore high waisted whited washed jean shorts, with a white tank top tucked in and my blue TOMS, I put my straight hair in a ponytailed and walked into the kitchen of the two bedroom apartment that my mother and I lived in. She wasn't home yet, "I guess her date went well" I said to myself as I grab a water from the fridge and left my house.
As I took the quick 5 min walk to my grandmother's house, I at least got beeped at about 5 times from people that I knew, but I had my headphones in so I just waved back and continued to my grandmothers.
As I reached to the small red house I open the door and a black cat meowed at me, "Hello Patty cat" I said as I walked into the house, the smell of books and stale coffee filled my nose, a small faint smile fell on my face, this is what my childhood was, my grandmother bookstore. Thats right my grandmother owned and lived in a bookstore, and it was perfect. So many memories were made in here and even though as I got older I don't come in here a lot I will always love this place and has a special place in my heart.
I walk further to the back of the house passing aisles with shelves full of books and I pass by my aging baby girl napping in one of the aisles, "Hey Juna girl!" I say as I walk over to pet the beautiful pitbull mix. She lifts her head and licks my hand as i run my hand through her fur, " Princess is that you?" I hear my grandmother scream.
I continue my walk to the back of the book store " Yes Nana!" I say as I enter the kitchen. Sitting with her is a beautiful young girl about my age of 18 " Ana this is Louise" my nana said smiling.
" Nice to meet you" I said smiling " Nice to meet you too Viviana" the girl said with a thick french accent.Three Years Later:
"Ana are you listening to me?" I look up from the book I was reading to look at my mother standing in front of me. It was my first night back home for the summer, and here I was looking at my 42 year old who could pass for 25. " How do I look?" she said looking at me nervously. If you listen closely you could pick up her faint accent that she still has even though she has lived in America since she was 9 years old. I looked at my beautiful mother, she was dressed in a fitted off the shoulder red jumpsuit that flared out at the legs with black heels. The red compliment her dark smooth complexion, her hair was slick back in a bun and wore no makeup besides red lipstick.
"Don't make me have to say it again!" she said this time she was getting pissed. "Oh sorry mom, you look great!" I said honestly, I looked back admiring my mother, she was perfect even if her life wasn't. Mother came from Liberia when she was 9 years old. She was brought here by her uncle who needed a babysitter for his daughter, so my mother's mother offered my mom, her youngest daughter to go to America for a better life. But life in America wasn't that better, she endured neglect and abuse from her uncle's wife and when they divorced years later they sent my mother back to Liberia. It was then my nana, my mother's High School French teacher decided to adopt her and bring her back to America, rising my mother as her own. By the time my mother was 22 she was pregnant with me by my father, who was secretly married and left us to be with his other family, so my mom raised me with the help of my nana, finished school became a nurse but has never been able to find the perfect guy.
My favorite thing about my little family is that whenever we go somewhere and we introduce ourselves, my nana introduces me as her granddaughter and the people smile understandably, but when my mom gets introduced as my grandmother daughter there faces changes right to confusion, as if how could this white women with green eyes have a black daughter, I start laughing just at the thought.
"What are you laughing at?" my mother said amusedly. " Nothing!" I said going back to my book "Would you like to join Frank and I?" I mother asked kindly. " You barely go out, you either are reading or studying! Ana, I want you to enjoy life while you are still young, don't be like me and never find love so you have to date either really young men or old men..."
" I am going out tonight, with Louise!" I lied, avoiding the nagging spiel that was about to take place but the moment I said that I knew I would regretted it. " Oh thats great!" she said as she walked into her room. I looked at the time it was 6pm, so I quickly hop in the shower. Coming out of the shower I called Louise, "Bonjour!" she said in her french accent. " Lo what are you doing tonight?" I asked my best friend. Since the first day we meet we have been best friends, she brings out the wild side of me, and I'm her voice of reason. " Nothing to special" she said in a way that I knew it was a lie. After explaining to her that I lied to mom to get out of going with her, she told me to come over so she can get me ready. I kissed my mom goodbye and ran over my nana's house.
