The boy in all black reads quietly underneath the bleachers. His eyes scan the pages of the book, his pale skin grasping tightly on the hardbound cover. He takes a deep breath and flips a page.
His mind wanders at the idea of vast universes. The concept of death and the afterlife, what comes after. If there are indeed intergalactic, interdimensional beings that lurk the plane of existence. Ones that are like gods? Ones that manipulate both time and space? The idea that we are indeed specks in a place far beyond imagination. What we see is not all that there is. There is so much more to life than the believing and dreaming or seeing as much as we can grasp. Than experiencing the finest moments in our life, than hoping and praying to something that may or may not exist. More than seeing through a tiny telescope at the galaxies far beyond our reach. And are we really just pawns in someone else's game? Is there really a God? A being we can't imagine? A being we can't see but believe? A being that lives within dimensions and can see everything our tiny little brains can't comprehend?
"Jordan, what are you doing here?" The goth boy looks up seeing his brown-haired friend, wearing a look of question. Jordan closes his copy of The Call of Cthulu.
"I was reading. Did you know that at lunch the gym is empty and quiet?" He says, smiling creepily. "I finally got to catch up on my reading."
"Haven't you read that book like a gazillion times?" He asks, emphasizing his point by flailing his arms. The other boy nods, still smiling. "Ok, no, you can't isolate yourself from people all your life, lets go."
The boy standing up grabs the dark boy by the arm and drags him out the gym.
"No! Caddy, I have and will forever live in the basement, I will not dare to step outside and see sunlight!! The world outside is too cruel! Let me enjoy my horror games!!"
"You are a goth-boy nightmare." James, also called Caddy, says as they make it out the gym and onto the hallway, where people question the groaning goth being dragged by the arm by a bearded teenager.
Matt and Mark look to the two guys, soon shrugging and returning back into their conversation.
"So, you gonna do it or what?" Mark asks.
"I don't know. I oversing, I think people are so done with hearing me sing." Matt replies,sighing afterwards. Mark gasps.
"Since when did Matpat ever say no to singing?" Mark says in question, putting a hand on his chest and wearing a look of surprise. He then rests the back of his hand on his forehead. "Oh, what shame! What shame!!"
"Mark..."
"Oh, Matpat! How could you ever say no to your massive number fans???"
"I don't have any-"
"How catastrophic! How horrific!!"
"Ok, Mark, I get it." Matt says in an annoying tone. The said boy straightens up and gets back to his normal self. He clears his throat and smiles widely, making Matt raise an eyebrow.
Suddenly, something struck Mark.
"OH MY GOSH!" He exclaims, "What if?"
"What if...?"
Mark grabs both of Matt's arms, getting his full attention. "What if you sing a song for Stephanie for the talent show??"
"What? That's ridiculous!" The other boy says immediately without hesitation. He thinks for a second. "Actually... that's kind of a great idea. Cheesy."
"Yea. Cheese factory level of cheese." Mark adds, "But, it's sweet. You'll embarrass her and mainly yourself but I'm sure she'll appreciate your... persistence..?"
"I don't know, Mark. Although... I don't know how to feel after what happened yesterday." He says nervously. Fischbach tilts his head and looks at his friend.
"Have you seen the pictures?"
"No... Fell asleep the moment I touched the bed."
The bell rings and it was time for the boys to head to class.
"You should check them out." He says before making his way to his next class. Matt doesn't follow him and heads to his own classroom.
He enters the computer lab and sits on his assigned seat. After waiting for his teacher to arrive, Matt decides to take a look at the photos Mark talked about. He took out his phone, unlocked it and searched through the photo gallery. The first couple photos he sees, it makes him sort of smile while at the same time feel guilt. It was just him and Stephanie on the red bridge, but... It looked like they had connection. A deeper connection far beyond comprehension. They're holding each other as if their life depended on it. He even remembers the feeling he felt at the situation, feeling his heart flutter a thousand butterflies. At the same time... He still believes that she has no interest. That this is all just a pity party thrown for him. He bites his lip, only to lose his attention to the sound of the door opening.
He looks up to see a new face he's never seen.
"Hi! I'm Mr. Fox! I'll be your new computer science and design teacher for the rest of the semester. Unfortunately, Mr. Miyamoto had some more important means to attend to and yes, I know he's a legendary teacher. You guys are blessed to have had him but I'm so honoured to take his place! Yay!" The older man raises his arms in excitement only to get weird looks from the students. He puts them down awkwardly. "Ok, let's get started."
~~~
After a class with Mr. Fox trying to be cool but failing to do so, making horrible puns and going on a rant on how the worldly problems found in today's society can be easily (but also not-so-easily) solved through peace and not war, the bell finally rings.
"Alright, kids! I'll see you tomorrow." He says, awkwardly waving to the students walking past him and heading straight for the door.
Matt stands up and picks up all his stuff, heading towards the door. Before he leaves, he stops for a moment, noticing the poor man's attempt on trying to be a good and cool teacher. He's most likely a teacher who once attended the school, an alumni. Matt could tell since Fox really looks up to Mr. Miyamoto since he was probably once his teacher. Matt sighs and clears his throat.
"What instrument does a skeleton play?" He asks, Mr. Fox lights up.
"A tromBONE!" The teacher replies, starting to chuckle. His laugh unusual yet pleasing to hear. "NYEHEHEHE!!"
Matt smiles, "I'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Fox."
"See you, uh..."
"Matthew. You can call me Matt."
Mr. Fox nods as Matt leaves the room. When he enters the hallway, he sees Sean leaning by the wall most likely listening in to Matpat's joking sesh. He smirks.
"You're a good kid, Matt." He says patting him hard on the back. Sean and Matt walk down the hallway, with the Irish boy's arm around the other boy's neck as a bro.
As Matt groups up and heads out the school, he realizes he hasn't made any eye contact with Stephanie. He saw her in class, sure... But there was no longer that connection. Matt sighs and takes a deep breath, he'll give serenading his love a shot.
Maybe it'll open her eyes and let her see his feelings.
