One of the scariest days of your life was when you received a call that woke you up asking,
"Hello? Are you y/n Quinn?" You had no idea who was on the other side of the call. It came up as a New York City number so you answered it.
"Yes, yes this is, may I ask who's calling?" Your voice shakily spoke out to reply to the man. There was a brief pause.
"I'm Officer West. I work alongside the fire department." You froze and all you could think about was that something awful happened to Q. It was so hard to listen to the call. Every word Officer West said before telling you what was going on felt terrible. "When Brian was responding to a call with 5 other firefighters, there was a substantial flame that ignited off some wood lying around the house. We cannot release any specific information, but I can tell you that Brian was not the only one injured. We requested that another crew came in to help finish taking out the fire and that a unit of EMSs come to do an evaluation on all of the responders afterwards." This was dragging on too long for you to tolerate. You just wanted to know if your husband was okay. "As soon as the other crew came in, the original 6 were told to exit the building and an EMS would help them. Your husband refused to leave and get medical attention until he was sure that the fire was out and people had been moved to safety. He was more willing to helping out his team that he was risking his life even more. He's a very brave man." You were shaking now. This felt like the longest conversation you've ever had. "Once the crew was told to exit the building, his fellow firefighters told him to just get evaluated for burns or anything else. Clearly he was fine enough to keep helping out. He refused to get medical attention until someone told him that it was the best thing for him to do. It turns out that he only has minor burns on his arms and hands. It is nothing dangerous, but we just like to notify the immediate family about what happened. He was begging me, 'Call Y/n, please,' until we got a hold of your contact information," Officer West explained.
You were relieved that Q was okay. You wondered how everyone else involved was doing and you wanted to see Q really badly.
"Is there any way that I can see him now?" You asked the officer.
"The EMS unit is still at the scene of the fire with Brian and the other members of the fire rescue team who weren't badly injured. He is just up here for monitoring. He's doing really well, almost like nothing happened. He wants to see you so I don't see an issue with it," you were informed of the approximate address since they were a block or so away from where everything happened. You grabbed your keys and hurried up there. You were much more relaxed after hearing that he was okay and that you could visit him.
Despite it being 2 in the morning, you were still very awake. The shift that Q was on was one that would go until midnight. You fell asleep before then and didn't even realize he wasn't home still at 1am. Since getting the call, it felt like morning and you felt like you were awake for the day. You were able to get to the scene in about 15 minutes. It wasn't too close to your house, but you were also driving a little too fast.
The first person you saw upon getting there was Officer West.
"I suppose that you are Mrs. Y/n Quinn," he said. You nodded. He shook your hand and added, "pleased to meet you,". He walked you over to where Q and a few other firefighters were. Q seemed the most awake and alert. He seemed more annoyed by the EMSs than he would be if he was in any type of pain. He was sitting on the edge of a stretcher with his legs crossed and dangling off the side. He was wearing a FDNY t-shirt and a pair of old sweatpants. He had his fire helmet on which was covering his messy head of hair. The rest of his gear was tossed on the ground near him. When he heard you talking to Officer West, he whipped his head around.
"Y/n!" He exclaimed. He was surprised that you were able to come up to see him. He knew that you were being called, but he didn't know if you would be able to visit or not.
