Bleed Black: An Academy Novel

Chapter Nineteen

       Katie ran out of her room ignoring to even put shoes on. Her messy hair stayed in her face sweat on her brows making hairs stick on her face. Ignoring the pain of the pavement on her feet and the chill of the night air on her bare legs and arms, Katie shoved the infirmary door open and rushed in. The lights were off making it hard to see Hero lying in her bed. Katie watched her friend as she laid in her small bed, her feet glued to the floor with nerves. After a minute Katie started to turn away, for nothing had happened and Hero had not made any noises. Then, that groan echoed through the deadly silent room. Katie whipped her neck around, her hair hitting her in the face, as she tried to watch her friend. Hero rocketed up like a bullet from her pillow. Her hands going to her side as she groaned and moaned in pain.

     "Hero!" Katie yelled causing a scream to echo out of Hero's dried lips as Katie rushed to her. 

     "Katie, go get Athena." Hero breathed out clutching her side as her white shirt started turning red. Katie nodded and blinds ran back into the night and ran to Athena's office. Pushing open the dark doors Katie stumbled into Athena's dark office, to see Athena's stone face sitting at her desk.

     "Katie. You should be asleep and not barging into my office." Athena snapped as Katie gulped down big breaths of air.

      "Hero is awake. She needs you." Katie said quickly. Athena rose from her chair in one swift motion, as was out the door and walking down the stone path before Katie could turnaround. It amazed Katie that Athena could move so fast though Katie had never seen her in the gym or doing anything. Katie rushed after her closing her office doors. Once they got into the infirmary Katie's eyes went bright as Athena switched the lights on. Once her eyes were adjusted she could see Athena quickly making something at a counter while Hero held her side as blood seeped through her fingers. Katie gulped in breaths of air, but kept finding herself unable to fully catch her breath as she watched her friend bleed. 

     "Katie, go to sleep. I can fix Hero and she will be up and able in two days." Athena said as she walked over to Hero and handed her a cup of murky liquid. Athena took Hero's hand off of her side and started working on it. Katie watched as her hands wrapped her friends stomach up, the wrap almost instantly turning red. Hero grunted out and swore under her breath. Katie almost laughed at her friend who told anyone off for swearing saying the worst word in the book. Though her laugh was stiffened by the look of pure pain on her friends face. Tears were streaming down her face as the bandages were finished getting put on.

     "Katie, how did you know that Hero was awake?" Athena asked as she stepped away from Hero, who was breathing heavily but was obviously doing better since she was breathing.

     "I had a dream that she had woken up, so I came down here to look and I was right." Katie said wanting to beg for Hero to forgive her and tell her it was all her fault. That she would not have gotten hurt if it was not for her. To tell Hero she had treated her the best since she was brought her by Sam.

     "You had a vision?" Athena asked as she turned to look at Katie. Her eyes filled with curiosity and worry. 

     "I didn't think it was a vision I mean it didn't have any creatures or anything." Katie said forcing her eyes away from Hero and to Athena. Hero let out a sigh that caused Athena to put her attention back on her and away from Katie and her dream. Katie turned on her heel and walked back into the cold night, where she walked back to her room with only the sounds of crickets to keep her company. Once she was in her room and the door was shut, Katie looked at her feet and saw many blisters. Sitting on her bed she touched the blisters and caused them to bleed. Wincing she grabbed a random shirt from her floor and put it on her foot. Groaning Katie flopped down on her bed and shut her eyes. A splitting headache had formed and was now pounding through her mind. Rubbing her temples, Katie attempted to sleep. Though her fear of her friend being in pain and mad at her kept her awake. After checking the time on her alarm clock to see it was past midnight, she got up and went to grab some sleeping pills so she could go to class tomorrow.
