It had been about a week since Kayla had died. There were less and less tributes every day. Kym and I had to move our camp every few days.
"Hi Paylor." Kym sniffled. "How long have you been awake for?"
"Just a few hours." I said. I stared across the clearing.
"What are you looking at?" Kym asked.
"Nothing. Just... thinking."
"About what?"
"Why we haven't found ourselves with trouble for the last five days. It's just really weird. No one is attacking each other. Don't you think that it's kind of quiet?"
"Yeah, sure." Kym said.
I turned to Kym. "No. Seriously."
Kym looked deeper into the woods. "You're right. In all the other games, there's like tracker jackers and stuff. Why not here?"
Don't jinx it! I think. "Let's make breakfast."
"Hey look, lucky us! A rabbit just when we need it!" Kym said. Kym tried to put her boots on quickly, but I was already ready. I lunged towards the rabbit. The rabbit's head turned to me slowly. Something was different from the rabbit. I noticed it too late. It was the eyes. Blood red eyes. The rabbit opened its mouth. Fangs hung from the rabbits gums.
I jumped away, but the rabbit was much faster than me. It leaped at me and jabbed it's fangs into my thigh. Blood spilled from my thigh. But the rabbit kept it's fangs there. Then, it pulled his fangs down my leg, drawing more blood.
"Paylor!" Kym yelled. She ran to me and stepped on the rabbit. Blood splattered the snow around Kym's boot. She took a step and left a bloody foot print. Kym ripped my pants open around my thigh and cleaned up my blood with a blanket. She was murmuring under her breath. She was crying. She poured water on my thigh. I screamed. It seared. My thigh was clean, but Kym noticed something else. Something that looked like unnatural crawling up my bloodstream. My vision blurred. I swayed. I blinked, but everything turned black.
. . .
My eyes were half open. Not even. I could barely see what Kym was doing. I couldn't see it clearly, but I knew what she was doing. Snow was red around me. Kym had put snow on my leg. Kym was packing everything.
"No, wait..." My voice came out as a whisper. "What are you doing?" Kym didn't hear me. Her hands were stained with blood. Kym raced into the woods leaving nothing but me, bleeding to death.
"Oh no." I heard. My eyes fluttered open. I saw a strawberry blonde haired girl coming to me quickly. Zoe. She stopped by my side and yelled for help. Fenn and Nico came running towards me. I couldn't make up what was happening. I got lifted off the ground and taken in between the trees. I appeared moments later in a camp, which must've been Zoe's. They laid me inside a tent and wrapped a blanket tightly around my leg. The poison was fading away now.
Zoe was crying her eyes out, but kept working. Nico came in at a moment to tell Zoe that the food was ready. Nico hugged Zoe and kissed her on the head. Fenn was sitting in the corner next to me.
"Thanks." I rasped, turning to him.
"No need to thank me." He said, looking down on me. We had a few moments of awkward silence and then Fenn spoke up. "I'm sorry about how I acted in the tribute center. I'll never find Evie no matter what. I'm ending my search." "But why? I thought you and Evie were together." "I've found someone new." "Who?" "You." "Oh. Great. That means you knew I had a crush on you all along."
Fenn took a deep breath. "You are and amazing person Paylor. You do so many amazing things. Also, you're so beautiful." "But you could choose-" Fenn kissed me, just there. A real kiss. We held the lip lock for a long time. I pushed him away. "You're giving up on Evie then?" He looked away. "I met her at the training center, and she told me that she found someone else. I left after that," he said.
"Paylor, I need to talk to you..." Raven said. She opened the door of the tent and put her head in. "So...oh. Is this a bad time?" Raven asked. Fenn sat back down. "Sorry." "Ugh!" Raven stormed out of the tent.
"How long has she been like this?" I asked. "Since about a week." Fenn replied.
"Where do all the other people sleep, you only have three tents." I asked. "I sleep in this tent, Raven sleeps in another and Zoe and Nico share one, obviously." "So where am I sleeping?" "Here supposedly. Raven doesn't want to share a tent with anyone." Zoe came in. "Paylor it's time to eat. You two Mr." Zoe walked out. "Get your butts over here you two lovebirds!" I laughed with Zoe and Fenn, something that didn't happen very often in the games.
Chapter 18
After a good dinner, we sat by the dying fire. Everybody was snuggled up together as if we were a big family except Raven. "I'm going to bed..." Raven said. She sulked towards her tent. I yawned. "I'll go to bed too." "Why? Aren't you going to stay here?" Zoe asked. "Nah, I rather go to bed than stay here. No offense." "None taken." " Night sis." Nico says. "Night." I walked towards my tent. I take off my shoes and open the door of the tent. I close the door of my tent and I open my jacket. I'm about to use my jacket as a pillow when I realize that I don't have a shirt on, I just have my undergarments on. I spot my shirt on my leg. Looks like they had used my jacket for my leg. I take off the shirt from my leg and then take off my jacket. Just then, Fenn open's the door of the tent. "Um, sorry." He says. I put on my shirt really quickly. My cheeks turn scarlet. Fenn took off his boots and entered the tent. He also took off his jacket. His shirt was ripped and splattered with blood. I realize that I'm staring at him. I look down. I put my feet in the sleeping bag and close my eyes. After a few minutes of trying to sleep, I turn over and face Fenn. He turned his face and looked at me. "Can't sleep either?" he asked. "Nope." I said. We heard a giggle coming from outside. "Probably Zoe and Nico. This is like the fifth night that there's giggling. I can't stand it." Fenn said. Fenn sat up. "You know what? I give up. I can't sleep. I'll probably never sleep as long as those two are together." He looked at me and smiled. "Maybe this will help you sleep." I pressed my lips against his, then hugged tight. He kissed back. He put his hand on my chest. We held it a little longer. He pushed away. "What was that for?" he asked. "Well, earlier we didn't do it, so I decided that we could do it now." I said. He turned his head and opened the door of the tent. "Let me think about it." he said. It was pitch black, but the logs of the fire still radiated heat. He closed the door of the tent. He took his shirt off. "Yes."
. . .
I woke up with the sound of birds chirping. I sit up and realize that I'm only wearing my undergarments, again. I look over at Fenn. His eyes are open. "You fell asleep too. It was a very... pleasant night." I remembered what had happened last night. "We should do it again sometime." I said. I leaned down and kissed him. He sat up, and was also only in his undergarments. He pulled on pants. I pulled on my pants and shirt. Fenn opened the door of the tent. I scoffed. "Fenn, I think you're missing something." He laughed. "Oh yeah." He pulled on his shirt. We put on our boots and headed next to the burnt logs. There was still a small amount of smoke coming off them. We sat down on a stump. We started talking about what we would do if we went out of the games. "I would stay with you Paylor. Even though we wouldn't be allowed to, I would." Fenn said, holding my hand. "Thank you." I said. I kissed him. "Help," Someone croaked. We looked towards the woods. Zoe was dragging herself towards us. Her face was dirty. Blood trickled from her nose and mouth. Her clothes were in rags. "Zoe..." I whispered. "Fenn, wake Nico up. We need a place for Zoe to lay down." Zoe shivered. She closed her eyes and her head on my lap. I look at Nico's tent. All I can hear is muffled voices. I look back at Zoe. Her lips are turning blue. I press her body to mine. I can hear rushed footsteps. I look back, Nico has his mouth hanging as he runs to us. "No, no no, no, no, no, nooo," He wails. Raven runs out hearing all the commotion. Tears are streaming down my face as Raven checks Zoe's wounds. Fenn presses his ear to her chest. He lifts his head, wide-eyed. "Her beats slowing down." Nico sobs as he presses his mouth to hers. Raven squeezes her eyes shut. All I can do is look away. Zoe takes a deep breath. Her eyes open slightly. "Nico..." she says. "Yes, Zoe, I'm here with you." Nico's face loomed over Zoe's. He put a strand of her hair behind her ear. "I... I love you Nico..." I look back at Zoe. Nico kissed Zoe all around the face, then in the lips, very aggressively. "I love you too."
Nico stayed with Zoe in his tent. I opened the door of the tent. Nico looked up at me with a sad face. I sit down next to Zoe. "What happened Zoe?" I ask. She took a deep breath. "I was hunting and," her face contorts with horror. She shivers. "And they came for me." "Who?" I ask. "The mutts. And I know who sent them. My aunt." "Is she really that bad?" "She's the person that everyone in Panem hates and has fear for." "Who?" She looks up at me. "President Snow."
