They played this cat and mouse game for too long. Now, the two star-crossed lovers laid next to each other under the stars on the back of Forsythe's borrower truck. Their hands brushing each other and their lips forming in small smirks. Their long nights together always ended up with them kissing with such passion that it made them breathless. Forsythe loved the way Maria would caress his jaw before kissing him, the way her hand tugged on his hair that made him moan quietly into her mouth. Then she'd pull away and look into his eyes, she would quietly whisper "I love you FP".

Those three words would trigger something in his mind. Something so untouched and unheard of. He would quickly pull away and look everywhere but at Maria. She would frown and sit up slightly to look at him in full detail. His lips formed a slight frown and his eyes seemed suddenly dark and unwelcoming. She had said the wrong thing again.

Maria was the only one in their relationship to say the L word. She always felt that she was ahead in the relationship, always ready for the next step. She realized that he had never said to her. Not when they were sharing secret kisses in the school closets or when he snuck into her bedroom just so he could hold her as she slept. He didn't even say it when they first made love. Maria always let it fall out of her mouth as Forsythe kissed her neck and thrust into her. But he never did. He never even told her that she meant anything to him.

FP swiftly slipped off the back of the truck and headed to the front to get into the driver's seat. Without even looking at the brunette he'd tell her "we better get you home baby". To say she was hurt was an understatement. So when Maria arrived home she whispered 'goodnight' to FP before slipping out of his borrowed truck and almost running into her room crying her eyes out.

This happened once a week.

The next morning they would pretend nothing had happened and carried on as they did before.

Alice wasn't always the most observant out of the girl gang but she knew Maria better than anyone else. She could tell something was bothering the young brunette, she could tell by how slowly she blinked and how her eyes were always glazed over with an undiscovered sadness. She decided in that moment that the Riverdale teens needed a huge party. Hal Cooper was on board the moment she mentioned party and he even offered to have it at his house but Hiram Lodge was in town and offered up his mansion for the party. Everything was in place.

It was the day of the party, the sun was high and the girls were lounging by Sweet Water River. Maria was reading some prestigious novel, Alice was painting her nails, Mary and Hermonie were testing the water temperature. Alice flipped her long blonde hair to the side and looked at Maria with mild concern and intrigue.

"What did he do?" Alice asked. The young brunette slid her glasses down her nose and glanced at her blonde friend, she simply shrugged before turning to watch Mary and Hermione laugh. "Nothing Alice." she sighed quietly, she couldn't bring herself to talk about it without her heart sinking.

"There must be something wrong, you two have been acting so weird. Even when he's down at the local Snake hangout he's all spaced out. It's weird. It's like I always say, don't trust a snake-"

"Okay, Alice I get it!" Maria suddenly snapped, her voice cracked ever so slightly at the end of her sentence. She let out a grumble before twisting her body towards Alice and faced her. "I'm sorry, it's just - I told FP I loved him but he never says it back." There was an awkward silence before the young blonde shifted closer to Maria who was on the brink of tears.

Maria leaned against her friend, letting her tears fall gently down her face. She sniffed harshly before saying something that turned Alice's stomach.

"It's not enough, I'm not enough."
