Marinette's POV
I raced down the street, not stopping even when Chat called my name, even when my ankle ached. I willed myself to run faster, to jump higher. I was out of breath, but I couldn't stop.
I had to blink away the tears.
My mom, my father, could be in danger at this very moment. They could be in trouble, they could be looking for me, and my stupid legs won't go any faster! My parents asmiling faces entered my mind, their outstretched arms wanting to hold me close to them.
My eyes began to water, and I blinked them away.
I jumped over cars, I bumped into people, I almost ran into a stop sign. The citizens yelled in anger and surprise, but I didn't have time to apologize. At the moment, they were obstacles. Obstacles I had to get through to reach my family.
The bakery came into view and I picked up speed. The momentum caused me to practical throw myself inside.
And immediately I knew something was off.
The lights were on, yet......something was wrong. There was a stillness to the air, to still. The temperature was freezing, and Papa always kept it on warm. It was so quiet, this bakery that always seemed alive whether my parent were out here or away, it never felt this quiet. This eerie. And what was that smell? It smelled rotten, like decaying..........ugh! I cant explain it. And that's what scared me.
"Mom? Papa?" I called out, my voice feeling strangely loud. I was met with the same silence as before. I called out again, but heard nothing. This is so creepy. I slowly walked towards the stairs and made my way up, clinging to the rail for support. As soon as i was half way up, it hit me, and I nearly threw up. The smell was stronger up here, way stronger. I held my nose and stepped on the last step.
The first thing I noticed was that the door to my parents room was gone. It wasn't opened, it wasn't closed, it was gone. Like it had never been there in the first place.
I readied my yoyo with my free hand, and cautiously walked to their room, my eyes darted left and right in case anything jumped out. When I finally got to the doorway, the smell hit me even harder. I gagged, even though I was holding my nose, and my eyes watered. What in the world is that smell, I thought.
When I walked all the way in, I stood in front of the mirror on the north wall. I screamed. There's something on the bed!
I turned in my heel fast, ready to defend myself. I gasped and my eyes widened, tearing up immediately.
Several things happened:
I dropped my yoyo.
I screamed in terror.
I detransformed.
I began sobbing uncontrollably.
And a dark blue butterfly flew through the window.
Volpinas's POV
I reluctantly watched LB run off. I wanted to follow her, help her. Yet, she told me to help Chat Noir. I glanced at Queen Bee, who shrugged and started towards the open doorway. Her staff glowed faintly, it was the only thing illuminating this space. That, and the butterflies. A horde of them were in what I assumed was the center of the room; and also where Hawkmoth and Cat Noir were.
The room was humongous. The shadows threatened to consume me, to swallow me up and leave nothing to remain. Almost like that time, several years ago...
Queen Bee startled me when she suddenly spoke, "What do we do now? Do we go help?"
I shook my head no. We were too far to hear what they were saying, so I gestured her to follow me. We stayed close, and inched closer until we could hear their conversation.
"-them out of this. They aren't the ones you want. And neither am I."
"Actually, they are. and you are too. See, all I need is your miraculous. Then you and your friends will be free to go, Chat Noir."
"Over my dead body." I clenched my flute and stifled the urge to knock them out. Something in my head was telling me to wait, and i obeyed.
Or maybe it was the fact that Chat Noir's whole demeanor scared me. Those shoulder's looked too stiff on the playful cat I'd always posted on the Ladyblog. His expression was too angry, almost like.....an animal. It made me shudder and my body warned me to stay as far away as possible.
"Did you know?" Chat asked, "All this time...did you know?"
"Know what?" Queen Bee whispered to me, and I shushed her.
Hawkmoth started to walk around, the butterflies following his every step. We moved deeper into the shadows.
"Know that my son is Chat Noir? It's hard not too. With you always disappearing, and missing your schedule, and mysteriously coming back. I'm not an idiot, son."
I covered my gasp with my mouth and looked at Queen Bee, whose eyes were as wide as mine. Chat Noir? Was Hawkmoth's son?
No Way. Impossible.
"Don't call me that."
"Let's go. I've heard enough," I told her. She nodded and we took off running. Hawkmoth looked in our direction, but he could see nothing but darkness. He didn't know what hit him. He landed on the floor, and Queen Bee cooed at her hand. "You poor baby, I'm so sorry. It won't happen again."
Chat Noir looked surprised and somewhat relieved to see us, but there wasn't time for any words to be exchanged. Hawkmoth stood, his bloody lip curled into an evil smile. He didn't even bother to wipe at the blood. "That was a nice hit, I admit it." He congratulated like he would with a child, finally able to ride a bike. It angered me.
"Why, thank you." Queen Bee flipped her ponytail. She smirked back at Hawkmoth, before a swoosh of light knocked her down. I stared in horror as she was now bleeding out of her abdomen. Chat and I rushed over to her. "Are you ok??" he asked, his eyes staring in disbelief. She used us a support and forced herself to stand. The wound wasn't as bad as I thought, it was a few long scratches that cut through her suit. The bleeding was minimal.
Now that I think about it, I don't remember a time when I've ever seen blood in a fight between Paris' heroes and the akumas. Never. and to see it so suddenly, it almost broke me. I thought them to be invincible, and now that was thrown right back in my face. I forgot how human they, we, were.
"Nice hit," she mocked, smirking at Hawkmoth, "I admit it." Her hair comb beeped, and she was clutching her stomach.
"Thank you.......but it wasn't me"
A figure walked towards us, until i could see her clearly. Her head was down as she walked, but i could make out two pigtails. Her costume resembled Ladybug, except the colors were invert. And my breath hitched as I realized it was her. Cat Noir looked as if he was in some Nightmare.
She stopped inches from us, and looke up. Her eyes were red, and she looked murderous. Hawkmoth joined her and smiled, the blood starting to dry on his lip.
"Well....three against one hardly seemed fair, don't you think?"
I apologize to whoever reads this book. It's been too long since I've updated, and I am incredibly sorry. I tried to make it a good chapter, but it still seems a bit rushed. I'll try to make the wait shorter this time.
Until we meet again.
