The following Friday during lunch, noting that both Camila and Lauren seemed almost back to normal, Dinah spoke to her two friends, "One of Normani's friends is throwing a party tonight, do you guys want to go?"
Camila looked up from the phone in her lap and Lauren looked up from her untouched food at Dinah's words.
Camila looked to Lauren as she spoke, "That could be fun, what do you think, Lo?"
Lauren didn't have a chance to respond before Camila had buried her face back into her phone and typed away eagerly. The green eyed girl rolled her eyes, Camila had been on her phone nearly the whole day, only tucking it away for a second when a teacher happened to walk by her desk during class.
Noticing her best friend's annoyance at her girlfriend's behavior, Dinah dropped the idea of the party and tried to move on to a different topic. "Did you guys start the new season of Orange is The New Black yet?"
Lauren nodded her head and gave Dinah a thumbs up. Alex Vause was one of her favorite TV characters of all time. Who wouldn't love a badass lesbian in prison with an affinity for reading and sarcastic comments? However, Lauren definitely felt that Alex deserved someone way better than Piper.
Both Lauren and Dinah then turned to Camila who had yet to respond. Feeling their eyes on her, Camila mumbled some sort of response without looking up from her phone.
Since they had gotten back together, Camila's attention had been on her phone almost the entire time. Lauren had asked who she was talking to once, after Camila had disappeared for a half hour on the phone, and Camila had replied with, "Oh it's nobody."
Of course, this did nothing but make Lauren's insecurities worsen. Had Camila met someone while they were broken up? Was she cheating on her now? Who was she talking to?
Needing some air, Lauren stood up from the table to throw out her uneaten lunch. As she made her way over to the garbage area, she was met with a struggling Jade. She was attempting to get the remaining food off of her tray and into the garbage without dropping the tray, but the garbage can was higher than her chair would allow her to reach.
Need some help? Lauren signed to the girl.
"Please," Jade replied with a grateful smile, handing her tray over to the raven haired girl. Jade studied Lauren as she threw their food out. The bruises were healing, but she still looked so tired.
"Hey, Laur?" Jade spoke to get her attention and Lauren turned to face her. "Are you okay?"
Lauren sighed at Jade's question and looked toward Camila across the cafeteria who was still glued to her phone.
"She was on her phone a lot during class today," Jade recalled, looking at Lauren to gage her reaction.
Lauren sighed again and nodded.
"Who do you think she's talking to?" Jade questioned.
Shrugging, Lauren signed, I wish I knew.
"Maybe she's cheating on you or something?" Jade throws out the possibility.
Lauren frowns, Maybe.
"If you really think about it, you two have been through a lot since you met, it's probably just more than she can handle," Jade continued to speak, vocalizing Lauren's fears. "Maybe she took a look at me and realized what being with you could mean giving up."
Lauren shut her eyes at Jade's words. She was right. Jade had gotten involved with Lauren and look at where it got her, maybe the same thing would happen to Camila. The very thought of hurting someone else nearly made her collapse. She looked toward Camila again, who was still very much enthralled by her phone.
"Just think about it, Laur," Jade said as she reached for Lauren's hand.
Quickly stepping out of Jade's reach, Lauren signed, I have to go, before sprinting toward the exit of the cafeteria.
Because she wanted to know if Lauren had told Camila how she got the bruises from her father, she took matters into her own hands, steering herself toward the table that Dinah and Camila sat around. Pulling up behind Camila, she spat, "If you're going to cheat on her, either break up with her or make it a little less obvious."
Camila turned around to face her after telling Dinah, who had just gotten up to give Jade a piece of her mind, to stay put. "What are you talking about, Jade?"
"You've been ignoring her all day and if I had to venture a guess, this is probably the first time you've looked up from your phone for more than half a second," Jade smiled as she spoke, the fact that Camila hadn't tried to kill her the second she heard her voice probably meant that Lauren didn't tell her about what had happened.
Camila refuted her claim, "That's not true.."
"Is that right?" Jade smirked, "Then tell me, where is Lauren right now?"
"She's..." Camila began, searching the noisy lunch room for her girlfriend, frowning when she realized she must've left.
"Exactly," Jade spoke triumphantly, "It's kind of hard to have a successful relationship when you fail to communicate with one another. I bet she didn't even tell you how she got all of those bruises."
Camila frowned again, "It's not like you would know either," came out as more of a question than a statement.
"Sure, if that's what you want to try to convince yourself," Jade responded, glad to be getting under the younger girl's skin, as the bell rang and signaled the end of lunch. "See you around, Camila," she spoke as she began to make her way out of the lunch room.
"Oh and by the way," she stopped and turned around to address a silently fuming polynesian, "gay is a good look for you, Dinah." Jade smiled at the pair once again and continued on her way out the door, blending into the crowd of students.
"What a fucking bitch," Dinah spoke as soon as Jade had left, "Every look is a good look on me."
Camila stayed silent, looking down at her phone at three new text messages from Andrew, one of Atticus' adoptive fathers. She thought about what Jade had said regarding the communication between she and Lauren. How did Jade know about the bruises and not Camila? Have they been hanging out together without Camila knowing? Was Lauren still in love with Jade?
Camila quickly sent out a text to Lauren and asked where she was and when no reply came by the time the school day had come to an end, Camila's worries and insecurities rose to the forefront of her mind, maybe Jade is right.
