Staring into the darkness, I sigh.
You're a fucking wimp.
Lucas can sense a change with me. I keep into contact with him but I'm slowly pushing him away. And he knows it. It will only be a short amount of time before he confronts me and I know it. He's stubborn like me.
It's three thirty in the morning and I can't sleep because all I can think about is Lucas. And about how I have to stop this. I don't care if he wins the bet.
I can't let him have the chance hurt me.
That's why I've never had a boyfriend. That's why I've never let myself fall in love. Because I'm scared. Scared of being in love; scared of giving someone the power to ruin me.
And that's why I have to push Lucas away. I'll make him hate me so he can move on and find someone worthy of him. Someone who won't hurt him. He acts like a cocky guy but on the inside he's actually incredibly loyal and protective of those he loves.
He definitely isn't what you expected the voice in my head whispers.
Yeah he isn't, which is why I didn't think I'd start falling for him.
Joke's on me.

Tossing and turning for several hours, I eventually give up on sleep and get up. I shower and change, and grab my phone, deciding to bite the bullet.
The sooner I get this over and done with, the better.
Me: Can you meet me at mine in 10?
Cocky dickhead: Sure. What's up?
I don't answer and suck in deep breaths. The doorbell rings, and I slowly make my way to the door.
Lucas stands there, worry in his eyes. He grabs my hands. "Are you okay? What's wrong? Is it your parents?" He fires question after question.
I stand there and commit his face to my memory: the gorgeous blue; the square jaw; the lips that aren't in their usual smirk. I intend to come out with something along the lines of "We need to talk." But instead what I actually say is, "The bet is off."
Lucas frowns. "What?"
I yank my hands out of his, and point them between us. "Whatever the fuck this is. Is off."
"Whatever the fuck this is?" Lucas repeats. "This is a relationship Rae."
"No. This isn't. It's a fucking bet. A game. Who can break who first?"
Lucas runs his hands over his face before tangling them in his hair. He clutches his hair as if he's about to rip it out. "I went about this all wrong. I know I said it was a bet but I said that because I wanted to get to know you better. From the moment I met you I knew there was something there. And you said you didn't believe in love so I decided to make a bet to try to get you to agree. For you to give me a chance." He pauses to take a deep breath. "Look I know we haven't known each other for long Rae but that doesn't change the way I feel about you."
My chest suddenly feels tight. "Lucas no please, don't-"
He stares into my eyes. "I'm in love with you Rae. I love your sarcasm; your sharp wit; the way you interact and get along with Jesse. I love the way you make me feel. I've never felt anything like this before."
I take a deep breath, forcing myself to sound cold. "I don't love you Lucas."
He stares at me, hurt in his gorgeous blue eyes. "What do you mean?"
I smirk cruelly. "I don't love you. Why would I?"
He flinches; his eyes closing; fists clenching. "You're lying." He softly whispers.
"Excuse me?" I snarl, desperately trying to get him to believe him. Don't make this any harder.
He stares straight into my eyes. "I know you're starting to fall in love with me. And it terrifies the shit out of you, so you're pushing me away so you don't get hurt."
My breath hitches in my chest. Fear floods through me. No. He can't know the truth. I'll devastate him. I'm a hurricane, which he thinks he can handle, but he can only handle the rain.
I need to hurt him; make him hate me so he can move on. "Yeah right. Why would I love you? You're just a fuckboy who only knows how to get laid and leave them like they're trash."
"Bullshit." He growls. "I see through you. I won't give up on us that easily."
"Well I am." I turn and walk away. Tears fill my eyes and slowly pour down my face.
