The fortress of the dragon council wasn’t close at all. I don’t think I’d ever felt so sore in my life. We flew almost nonstop for days on end. Septa told me we were heading to the northern seas. The fortress was on the coast. I could tell when we were close when I smelled the approaching ocean. The salty sweetness of the air was refreshing and reminded me of going to the beach when I was young. The only difference was it was a lot colder. Not just the weather either. The tension between the other dragons and our party was thick.
We finally landed in front of the fortress, the ocean crashing against its rear. We walked in relative silence, following the other dragons into the giant building.
“Why does Septa seem so angry at the other dragons? There just seems to be coldness there.” I asked Caius, and he scowled.
“They think they’re above Septa because he consorts with humans. Most dragons don’t do this. They feel they’re at an entirely different level.”
“I see.” I said, feeling my lips fall into a frown as well.
‘So, convincing them will be hell,’ Alume stated and I rolled my eyes.
‘Seems so. Great. Just what we needed. More problems.’
“I know your nervous Carina, but you’re they’re only hope. They’ll have to at least hear you out.”
“Doesn’t mean they have to agree with me though.” I groaned.
I couldn’t help but gasp as we entered the fortress. It was beautiful, the walls embedded with jewels and gems of all colors and the windows were beautiful stained designs. “It’s beautiful.” I commented and Janyi turned her head back to me.
“Yes, as dragons we are quite attracted to jewels. We found this cave and had the dwarves carve it out into a fortress for our use. It’s been our home for a very long time.”
“Dragons are hoarders. They find treasure and hoard it in their home. Finding this cave full of treasures was a dream. It was a long time ago, before Septa was even born.” Caius explained to me in a whisper. I watched as the other dragons beside Janyi headed down a different corridor than us and disappeared from view.
“Where do the other dragons live? What did they do before this was built?” I asked curiously as we turned down a long corridor lined with dragon sized doors.
“Most dragons live in caves of their own where they keep their own treasures. It’s what they’ve done for years. However, living together felt safer and smarter, so most decided to come here. Septa is one of the few who left.”
“Sounds lonely,” Alume said. Caius merely shrugged.
“This will be where you will stay, Lady Carina.” I looked up in shock at the large door and Janyi opened it for me. “King Caius, you will stay across the hall. These rooms are prepared to suit humans for visitors. Though, I will tell you they might be a little dusty. They do not get much use. Septa, your room is down the hall where it has always been. I trust you remember the way?” Something passed between Septa and Janyi in the way they gazed at each other. It was a familiar look, the way I looked at Caius. I had to hide the shocked expression from my face. I suppose I had never thought of Septa as someone who would be romantically involved with another. The moment didn’t last long, however. Septa nodded and made his way down the hall, giving me a reassuring look. Janyi looked back to me and I straightened. She still made me nervous.
