It is the fifth month of the Imperial Year 3216. The Mostrel's civil war has ended, and now the Empire and Ky Commonwealth, or rather, the remnants of the Ky Commonwealth prepare for the Mostrel's next moves.
Even though Pelayo Perida, the Duke who stopped the Mostrel Invasion ten years ago is gone, there is hope. And it is not in machines that they hope, but in fierce bravery, cunning, and the strength of their people. But the Mostrel too are cunning. For months, new Mostrel ships have been seen on the Ky side of the Wilderness, the depopulated region between the Mostrel and the Ky. And now these new "Raiders" have begun attacking.
Commodore Tezir Perida, oldest son of Pelayo Perida, is certain the Mostrel will do more than harass their shipping, like pirates. But his political enemy, J'Kotha, thinks not, and has convinced the Dukes to support liberating an Imperial system under siege by the Mostrel, something Tezir also supported.
J'Kotha's hate is not limited to the Perida family, and he has begun plans to overthrow yet another Ky family that stands again him: Retswer. Tezir's time and resources are limited, thus he commissions Dr Retwser and his "science team" to assist in uncovering the Mostrel's plans, attaching them to the Alecto.
Though the Alecto is not altogether ready. She just completed seven long months of repair, Tezir is still finding replacements for the third of the crew that was lost in the last mission. Captain Tagus Perida, Tezir's youngest brother is her captain, and while he is an excellent tactician, he is darning and bold, and somewhat wreck-less. Not the best suited for this type of mission, but he is the only one Tezir trusts so.
