I open my eyes to the sight of sunlight streaking my room. Remembering my plan, I leap out of bed ready for a full day of completing chores. Quickly, I pull on shorts and a tank top, racing downstairs. I need to get everything done really quickly if i want to go ahead with tonight. Which I do.
Racing through the day, I barely stop for lunch, let alone other meals and snacks. I realise everyone is giving me strange looks, but I don't care. They don't scare me. The staff won't do any thing about me anyway. They never do anything. My fathers acting bristly today. Chris is avoiding me. Why? Does father know about my plans? He couldn't! He might have suspicions. . . Crap. That might mean putting off tonight. . . Dammit!!! What if I just went ahead anyway? No, wouldn't work. I would end up not being able to go at all. My resolve is divided. I really want to go see what's going on down there, but I don't want to get caught. If I take my chances, I might never see the basement door again. Emphasis on the might. If I put it off I most definitely will not be able to sleep. Life, honestly.

That night, I'm still tossing my options. Go or don't go? Discover or stay covered? Be brave or hide? The latter seems like the most practical solution. But even so, I find myself getting out of bed and changing. I do not make a sound. Quiet as a mouse, as stealthy as a ninja. Hopefully.
I creep down the stairs leading to the kitchen and grab my hairpin. I couldn't find the key today, Dad must've moved it. Again my resolve divides. Half of me wants to turn around and go to sleep. And the other 50% of me wants to go bloody find out what's down there already!! What if Dad finds me? What will I do then? How will I explain myself? What if down there, in Tank 2, there's just some STUPID rare species of fish that few people know about? Doubt that. Dad wouldn't keep that a secret from me. Would he? I feel my resolve rebuild itself. I'm going down there no matter what.
The marine life stare at me as I tiptoe past them.
They must have heard me coming down the steps. They hear lots of things you know. Once when dad was really happy, he told me that mum always said to him: "the fish will always keep your secrets" Right now I'm trusting the fish to keep my secret. After staring at them long enough ( our silent secret keeping treaty ) I move on. Sneaking toward the basement door like the ninja I claim to be. I taught myself how to pick locks when I was bored, figuring one day I would want to sneak out. Presumably to a party or to meet a certain someone. But now I need the skill for something entirely different.
Silently I work on the lock. Picking, twisting and turning until I hear the lock click. I'm ecstatic. I slide my pin back into my hair and open the door. It slowly creaks open. I curse the door for being so loud and duck inside the small gap. A long flight of stairs folds out before me. Created by the dim light from the open door. Turning around, I shut the door, wincing at the sound it makes. I descend, feeling my way down the steps. When they end, I feel my way down the hallway, making my steps as light as possible. My shoulder hits the edge of a door. I feel for a sign. It is embossed, it says ' Tank 1 '.
Getting closer.I continue down the corridor, summoning the courage to keep going. I trip, landing face first on the cold cement. Pain jolts through my entire body. The sound reverberates through the walls. I turn around, examining my knee. It might be a bruise. The damage isn't bad at all. Looking over my knee, I see a rock.
" Right," I reassure myself. I leap up and continually ignore the dull pain in my knee.Ramming into the door, I reach my hand up and feel the sign. There is nothing there. 'Huh'. Must've been ripped off. I move my hand down to where the doorknob would be. Feeling the cold metal of it I turn it. Locked. How? Why? Wait it's not just locked but padlocked?! Yanking my bobby-pin out of my hair, I begin working on the lock. Did the person who inserted this lock really think that it would stop me? Ha. Whatever's in here must be really important. I keep working.
Eventually, I hear the lock click and I get my first glimpse inside.
