Wedding Day

Ianto’s POV

~

My suit is so pale that it looks pearlescent in the light. Such a pale, misty grey. Jack’s suit is slate, and we have matching emerald ties.

Butterflies are flapping about in my stomach. I’m fidgeting more than a box of ferrets right now. Tosh gently takes my hand and smiles at me. My dad’s dead and Rhiannon refused to come, so she and Gwen are my bridesmaids, even though I’m technically a groom. John is the best man, Jack insisted. I don’t mind though, not really.

The music starts and we all step forward, walking down the aisle. I never imagined me walking down the aisle, I always thought some gorgeous young lady would be walking towards me. But instead there’s a gorgeous man waiting for me at the end.

“If anyone sees reason why these two should not be wed, speak now or forever hold your peace.” The minister says, her voice echoing around the venue.

“Um...” beads of sweat appear on Jack’s forehead “Ianto, there’s something I have to tell you.” Muffled gasps from some people, knowing glances from others.

What’s he going to say?

“Ianto, I should have told you this before, but I couldn’t bring myself to. If you don’t want to marry me after I tell you this, I’ll understand.

“Those nightmares you’ve been having... They are true.

“I was born in a universe parallel to this one, and I saw that happen to you. After, I was torn. I found the Doctor and he agreed to bring John and I into this universe. But he broke the laws of time, so no matter what happens, we can never return.

“Those babies we found? They were John and I, just after we were adopted by the Time Agency to be trained. That’s the reason why I’m allowed to be here, because the us from this universe don’t exist.

“That’s why I want to protect you more than anything. Because I love you, and if” his voice cracks “if anything bad happens, I can’t stop it. The Doctor in this universe doesn’t really know me, he wouldn’t be able to help.

“That’s how much I love you, Ianto: enough that I re-lived my entire life just so that I could be with you. I was never able to say that I loved you, so I came here so that you would know that.”

Some people in the audience are crying. My heart is pounding. I feel numb. But I know what I want to do.

I take my ring for him off the cushion in front of us and slip it onto his finger.

“I do.” I say, my voice carrying off the high ceiling.

“I now pronounce you married. You may kiss the groom.” The minister smiles and gestures to Jack to put my ring on.

A white-gold band for each of us, and as he slips it onto my finger and then gently kisses me, all I can think of is the words on the inside of my engagement ring:

Not just a blip in time.
