Alex and I entered our room and he dropped all our stuff on the floor that made a loud thump. I stared at him and I just wanted to be in his arms, where I felt safe. I've never been like this to any boy before.
"Penny for your thoughts," Alex said as he jumped on the bed.
"Nothing important," It would be too embarrassing to tell him what I was actually thinking.
I walked towards the bed and sat next to him.
"You've been very serious lately," I told him.
"Probably your effect on me," He said making me blush. I hated being vulnerable like this.
"Alex?"
"What is it?" He managed to rest his head on my lap. My hand traveled to his chest. It felt nice being like this.
"Am I really a mistake?" Alex gave a sigh at the words that came out of my mouth.
"Don't tell my bro I told you anything, okay?" I nodded in response.
"Look Erin, before you came there was only one girl in our lives, Cassandra," I could feel how uncomfortable he is of the topic and I was very appreciative of him.
"Who's Cassandra?" I was dying to know.
"Cassie was our friend since we were young. The three of us would always be together," He was hesitating to continue but he did. "When I was 17, Sam was 15 and Cassie was 16, we made a promise to her," The suspense was killing me.
"What was the promise?" I asked.
"Its been 8 years Erin," He replied. "Tell me," I insisted.
"We promised her that one of us was going to marry her one day. I was in love with her but Sam, he adored her and loved her more than I could. To be honest, they're probably perfect for each other," I felt pain inside me as Alex's words registered. They were both in love with someone else. Why was I feeling this way?
"Tell me more," I said staring straight into Alex's eyes.
"I was prepared to let her go. It was obvious that Sam needed her more and I couldn't really take care of her. Everything was great until I turned 18. Things happened and we had to leave everything behind, including Cassie. My brother kept mourning over his lost love since that day and we both agreed not to let anyone in our lives," There was sadness in his voice as he told the story. "When I bought you, it was just supposed to be for fun. I never thought I'd actually like you," A small smile formed on my face. He liked me. I can't help it, I'm a teenager.
"What does this story have to do with me Alex?" I sincerely didn't understand the connection.
"The point is Erin that the only reason Sam is shoving you away is because he cares about you. He's just afraid to lose someone he cares about again," I was shocked. Sam cared about me. He didn't hate me.
Alex lifted my chin so I was staring into his eyes. I blushed again. "And I care about you too Erin," Alex said as his lips met mine.
