"Webtail, did you get anything out of Finchstalk about Whisperkit?" A large tom asked his mate, a small silver tabby she-cat compared to him.

"Not yet, Kestrelwhisker. It might just be something small that will go away soon. She is only one moon old, after all!" Webtail looked across the ThunderClan camp to where the medicine den stood.

Webtail looked down at her paws. She thought enviously of Rosepelt. Her kits, Volekit and Violetkit, had nothing to worry about. They were always perfect, as all of the Clan said. Though Whisperkit never got those compliments, since she seemed to have a mysterious issue that she couldn't solve. Finchstalk, ThunderClan's medicine cat, was now tackling the mystery. Whisperkit was with Finchstalk in the medicine den, doing things that only they know.

Webtail's gaze darted up as she saw Finchstalk and Whisperkit walking out of the medicine den in the corner of her eyes. Kestrelwhisker ran to Webtail's side as Finchstalk and Whisperkit approached.

"Well? Do you know what is wrong with our precious kit?" Kestrelwhisker demanded Finchstalk, making her flinch.

"Yes, I have. Well, Whisperkit is... well, she's deaf. Can't hear a single thing." Finchstalk looked down sympathetically at Whisperkit.

"She is... deaf. I just really don't know what to do now." Webtail looked down at Whisperkit, clearly in a daze of shock and surprise.

"Then how is she supposed to be the best warrior in the Clan? She will be pathetic!" Kestrelwhisker screeched in fury, glaring at Finchstalk and Whisperkit.

"Dear, we shouldn't judge her-" Webtail was cut off as Kestrelwhisker hissed and stalked into the warriors' den.

Webtail sighed and looked down at her paws again. Kestrelwhisker shouldn't have acted like this, not to his own daughter.

"Don't take it so hard. He'll get used to it as time goes on. Soon he will realize that Whisperkit is very special since kits are rarely deaf. Think of her deafness as a special quality in Whisperkit." Finchstalk laid her tail on Webtail's shoulder.

"What if Kestrelwhisker is right? Since she is deaf, she probably won't become a warrior, instead a medicine cat! She can never fight if she can not hear directions." Webtail mewed, her expression showing anger and sorrow.

Whisperkit looked up at her mother, not understanding why her mother looked so sad and angry. Was it something she did?

"Mom, what is happening?" Whisperkit asked, not aware that her mother's response would never be heard by her for as long as she lived.

Finchstalk looked down at Whisperkit sadly, then hurried her to the nursery. Webtail walked away into the warriors' den with her tail drooped down. Kestrelwhisker was curled up in his nest, facing the wall.

"So I was just thinking, maybe you were right about Whisperkit. She might never become a warrior at all at the least." Webtail murmured, laying down in the nest next to Kestrelwhisker.

"Of course I was right. What else comes from a weak warrior, nothing but failure and misery." Kestrelwhisker grunted, turning in his nest to look at Webtail.

"I suppose so. That's why I love you. You are always right and strong." Webtail pressed her fur against Kestrelwhisker's fur, purring.
