Chapter One: What It Means To Be Deaf

Whisperflight ran forward, racing after a squirrel. She took a huge leap, closing her mouth around the squirrel's throat. Whisperflight's tail flicked in satisfaction, then dug a hole. She set the squirrel down in the hole, brushing the dirt over it.

I wonder where Volefoot and Thrushstar went... Whisperflight's ears twitched, thinking.

Whisperflight stalked forward, right as she picked up a powerful scent of a mouse. With her nose, she tracked the mouse in a clump of ferns, nibbling on a seed.

"Ahhh!" Whisperflight screeched as she collided in the air with a cat.

As she crashed to the ground, the mouse racing away, she looked up at the cat. Brown and white fur... Volefoot. Whisperflight glared at the tom.

"You lost me my mouse, Volefoot!" Whisperflight grunted as she stood up as did Volefoot.

Volefoot's ears flattened and it looked as if he was yelling at Whisperflight. Not soon after all of Volefoot's fussing, Thrushstar trotted into the clearing. Whisperflight shook her head, then ran to her buried squirrel, dragging it back to Thrushstar and Volefoot.

"Is this good enough, Thrushstar? Should we head back to camp?" Whisperflight asked the brown tabby tom, the squirrel in her mouth.

Thrushstar nodded, then mewed something to Volefoot that she could never hear. Whisperflight said a muffled 'thank you.' before running back towards the camp. The small breeze rustled Whisperflight's fur, making her feel energized. Every twist and turn fit to Whisperflight's paws, every leaf felt like StarClan's blessing. She soon skidded to a stop in front of the entrance to the camp, then walked in.

Whisperflight hummed as she dropped her squirrel on top of the fresh kill pile. The biggest catch of the day, She thought happily. Just as she turned around she backed up in surprise a bit to see Bellypaw.

"Bellypaw! You scared me for a second there! What do you need?" Whisperflight asked, her ears twitching.

The fat apprentice just pointed his tail towards the nursery in response.

"Webtail wants me to go and help with Icekit for a while? Thanks for telling me! Sorry that we couldn't train today, maybe tomorrow." Whisperflight walked away after Bellypaw nodded, headed towards the nursery.

Whisperflight ducked under the weaved bramble entrance, then almost crashed into Icekit. Icekit opened her mouth, probably mewing something to her that she couldn't hear.

"So Webtail, you needed me to watch Icekit for you?" Whisperflight laid down next to Icekit, not letting my eyes off of the kit.

Whisperflight looked up when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She saw Sorrelwind standing next to her with Skykit and Barkkit at her side.

"Sorrelwind, where's Webtail? Bellypaw told me that Icekit needed to be watched." Whisperflight mewed, looking up from Icekit to Sorrelwind.

Sorrelwind shrugged, then nodded towards the entrance, then curled up in her nest.

"Oh! You'll watch Icekit for me? I assume that's what you mean. Thanks!" Whisperflight thanked Sorrelwind, then ran out of the nursery. 

Whisperflight didn't ever want to be a queen like her mother or Sorrelwind. What's the use of getting a mate and kits? I'm deaf, and I like it. No one understands me but myself, so I'll live alone and die alone, Whisperflight narrowed her eyes from her thoughts.

"Hey, Bellypaw!" Whisperflight ran up to her apprentice, who was greedily gobbling down her huge squirrel. "Hey! That was supposed to be for the elders! Anyway, it turns out we still have some time to do training. Do you want some more training? And take the rest of that squirrel to your mother!" 

Bellypaw nodded before heaving himself up with great effort, then waddled on his short legs to the nursery with the remains of the squirrel. Whisperflight rolled her eyes at Bellypaw. That apprentice needs the training! He always pushes of work! But that is the reason he is my apprentice. Thrushstar knows that it is hard for me to work with the Clan, so getting a cranky apprentice was the least of my worries! Whisperflight thought, looking on into the blue sky.
