Meredee wanted nothing more than to be anywhere but here, far away from the situation that left her heart hammering and her mouth stuttering. "Uhh—I, um..ah...This is ... Judson.... He's not important. No one you need to worry about!" she turned to Silvana and spread her hands, almost trying to hide Judson behind her. This was terrible! She did not want him to meet her mother who was a mad woman bent on some crusade of revenge.

How would she even introduce her? Hey Judson, meet my mom. She's sarcastic and bitter, but friendly...some of the time. She looks like me and lives in this dark and creepy castle. Oh, and did I mention? Make one wrong move and she might turn you into a dragon.

Yeah, that would be epic. How was she supposed to keep Judson away from someone as twisted and mad as Silvana? There was no telling what she would do to him if she so felt the desire.

"No one important? I highly doubt that," Silvana stepped closer to Meredee, a cunning expression lifting her lips.

Immediately Judson stepped in front of Meredee and unsheathed his sword. "Stay away from her! I know who you are," he spoke fiercely, his deep masculine voice booming across the castle courtyard that had earlier rung only with feminine pitches. Xechar, his ever-loyal horse, trotted up and stood on the other side of Meredee, and she took comfort in the fact that they were both protecting her, enfolding her in their close proximity.

"Do you, now? I doubt it," Silvana narrowed her eyes and laid a finger on the sharp tip of the sword. "Put the sword away and be a good boy, then no one needs to get hurt," she tilted her head and seemed to scrutinise the young man. "Have I seen you before?"

"No—o," his voice wavered slightly, unnerved by Silvana's strange question, "but I've heard of the evil practices that go on up here, and Meredee's told me how you've cursed her with some dark enchantment."

A shrill chuckle escaped Silvana's lips, "I am her mother. I would never curse her."

"I beg to differ," Judson pressed on bravely, and Meredee's heart hammered with a strange emotion at the way he stood up and defended her like that.

"Judson, be careful," she said softly, laying a hand on his arm and eyeing Silvana warily.

"Oh yes, Judson, do be careful," Silvana taunted, raising her arched brows as she said his name. "If you've heard so much about me, why did you dare come up here? Hm? Curiosity? You know, there's a saying in another world that goes, 'curiosity killed the cat'." She laughed a grating laugh, and Meredee cringed, her stomach churning.

"Why don't you come along inside now," Silvana continued in a smooth voice, "I'll make us something to eat. You must be famished after your dangerous journey," she smirked at Judson.
