~Frank~
It wasn't that the car ride wasn't fun, actually it was quite pleasant. It was Leo's singing that ruined the mood. He sang strange songs about wheels on a bus, how they go in circle's? I really have no idea. His voice was worse than the songs. It sounded like the cross between a cat being run over by a semi and an Aphrodite girl screaming over new shoes. Drew got a new pair of heels last week, she has yet to stop screaming with joy. Everyone was covering their ears, it hurt too much. Until Leo pulled into a gas station. Everyone jumped out immediately. Except Hazel and I. She sat down next to me. I was sitting on a random bed.
"Hey," she said.
"Hey," I said ,"I have something for you." I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small orange box. I handed it to her.
"I thought we agreed no gifts this year," she whinnied. I laughed.
"You agreed, I didn't." She opened the box and gasped. Her eye's widened. She pulled out a locket. It was in the shape of a panda. She always called me her panda.
"Oh Frank, it's beautiful!" she exclaimed.
"Open it," I whispered in her ear. She did.
"An inscription? You devil, you. 'To my gem, Frank.' I love you, Klutz." She hugged me tight.
"You don't really remind me of a panda anymore though. I miss that. The Blessing Mar gave you changed you. But I don't care. You're still my Klutz. Even though you are a lot more balanced now." I laughed.
It had changed me. Physically and emotionally. I felt more mature. And stronger. I know I intimidate guys a lot more now. One time Hazel and I went to the movies to see this movie that takes place in the 1920's. Well, I had to use the restroom, so I gave her a few bucks to go get candy. When I came back, she was surrounded by three guys. One was playing with her curly hair, another was cornering her and the last was trying to lead her out of the theater. Up until then I had never had to be intimidating. So I walked up behind the tallest one and said,"Is there a problem, gentlemen?" The guy turned and looked at me. I'm 6"4. He was like 5"11. He gulped and backed away from me.
"No, no-no problem here. This lovely girl was just asking where the theater was." His voice cracked about three times. I crossed my arm's and tilted my head up but didn't lose his eye's.
"Is that so?" I asked. My voice was an octave higher. They all nodded. I walked over to Hazel, put my arm around her and said ,"Well, thank you gentlemen for helping out my girlfriend. Have a pleasant afternoon." They all nodded again then speed-walked out of the theater. Hazel laughed when they did.
"They looked like they were gonna wet their braccae!" she said. I nodded, laughing. She stood on her tip-toes and kissed my nose.
"You are a lot smarter than I give you credit for. And I love you for doing that." She snuggled close to my chest . I kissed her head. We watched the movie, ate candy and went back to camp. The movie was good, and the best part was I used the old yawn-and-put-your-arm-around-your-date move. Hazel giggled and put her head on my shoulder for the rest of the movie.
"I am more balanced now, aren't I?" I said.
"Yeah. Come on. Let's go see what everyone else is up to." She took my hand and we walked out of the van. The gas station was small and stinky. The cashier was passed out on the ground. Jason and Leo were getting drinks while Percy and Annabeth were getting other supplies. I assume The Stoll's were pumping gas. I didn't see Katie though. Annabeth kissed Percy on the cheek when he dropped everything he was holding.
"BLEUGH!" Leo said.
"You know, Leo. When you get a girlfriend, you are gonna be just like that," Annabeth said. Percy, Jason and I nodded. He then looked to the ground, his eyebrows knit together.
"I'm gonna go back to the van." He quickly walked out of the store. It was quiet for a minute, thought the clerk was snoring loudly.
"What was that about?" Percy asked.
"I know. I'll go talk to him." Hazel walked out after him.
~Hazel~
I ran after Leo, who had run into the van. I knocked on the door, then walked in. Leo was sitting in the drivers seat. He was staring out into the sunset.
"Hey Valdez." He didn't respond. I sat down in the passenger's seat.
"Three years. It's been three years since I promised Calypso I'd come back to her, and I still haven't figured out how to do it." I rubbed his back.
"I know. You will do it though."
"I wonder how long she thinks it's been. A year? Two? Ten? Maybe she think's I'm already dead and is waiting for the next hero."
"Don't say that!"
"But what if it's true?"
"Then...I don't know. If another hero goes to her, maybe they won't leave. She'll be happy."
"But...what about me? Who will make me happy?"
"I thought you liked Katie." He laughed.
"Katie? No, she's just a friend."
"Are you sure she knows that?" I asked. He shook his head.
"Well. Maybe she should know." I know for a fact that Katie really liked him. And Travis.
"Hazel, I have to ask you something." I nodded.
"I think I know how to get to her again." My eye's widened.
"How?"
"Arion!"
"Alright. What about him?"
"He can run really fast. Well I figured, if he runs fast enough, he can run on water. He could take me to her. It is said that her island, Ogygia, is off the coast of where she lived when she was mortal. Malta! She's so used to the ocean there that they wouldn't move her. So she could live in peace and suffer in silence. If Arion and I get to Malta, we might be able to find her island! It's just a hunch, but maybe it'll work." I smiled at him.
"Well I hope it does. But, if you do get there, then what?"
"What do you mean?"
"Are you going to stay there or just visit once in a while?" I asked.
"I want to stay there, but I know I can't. But if I stay, I break her curse. Then maybe she could leave."
"But are you willing to take that chance? What if you stay and then you can't leave either? Do you love her enough to risk that. You'd never see us again."
"Yeah. But I love her. I know that. And I'm willing. Yeah I'd miss you guys, but I'll be happy. I haven't been happy in a long time." He then got up and walked out of the van. I took a deep breath and followed.
