It wasn't the reunion he was expecting, but it was a reunion he deserved. As soon as Helix's back turned the corner, King's face was met with Zee's fist. King staggered back under the force of the punch. He put his hand to his neck and tried to shrug it off.
"That's fair," King said.
"What the hell, King?" Zee said as Lilly stood behind him—still bleeding down her forehead.
"Well, you've gotten a little stronger, Zee," King mused, "or braver."
"Zee!" Lilly yelped. "He saved my life. So what if my head got scratched. I've had worse. You didn't have to go off and hit the guy."
"First Bella," Zee huffed, "now her? I'll be damned if you ever lay a finger on Lilly again."
"I get it," King said as he held his hands up. He didn't want to fight anyone—let alone Zee. He had more important things to tend to—like Lucky. "Sorry, my bad. I should have been more gentle when I pushed her out of harm's way."
"I told you some creep was here," Lilly snapped as she pulled Zee back by his sleeve. "They had us cornered. King just pushed me out of the way so that I could go find you. Good gawd, Zee. It's not like he intentionally hurt me."
"I don't care if it's intentional or not," Zee spat, but he closed his eyes and tried to restrain himself. He turned his back on King and decided to look at the field across from them instead.
It lay vacant and sage-like on the opposite side of the apartments and littered telephone poles. It was all just noise to him. Still, Lilly was behind him, and she was safe.
"Thank you."
"Who's with Lucky?" King asked. "Is Bella...Okay?"
"They're fine," Zee said. He turned back around to look at King—this time without all of the rage. Something was definitely still off with him still. "What happened?"
"Ran into Bella's dad," King sighed with a slight laugh. "He's...done something stupid."
"Like what?" Zee asked.
"I'll handle it," King sighed. "My head hasn't been...screwed on right. Sorry. Let's go back. I need to make things right...gotta get my punch from Felix, too."
"Ain't gonna lie," Zee shrugged. "He's pissed. You're head isn't on right. Just what are you planning to handle, King?"
"It has to do with my father," King said, "not anyone else, and I'd like to keep it that way if you don't mind."
"Don't think for an instant that I'm not watching you," Zee said. First, King hit Bella. Then, he ran off to Earth only for him to be found with Helix. All of a sudden, he didn't care about settling things with Sean any more. He was being suspicious. He wasn't being open, and Zee didn't trust it.
"You're welcome to watch," King mumbled.
King started walking with a shrug of his own. He squinted his blue eyes in the sunlight and made his way back towards the portal. The air around them evened out just a little bit, and Zee could tell how tired they all were.
"By the way," Zee sighed, "how in the hell did you seal that portal? Took me forever to break it open again. Were you even planning on coming back?"
"Not really," King said, "guess I just had a change of heart."
Lilly trailed behind them with a stomach full of knots. She felt the cell phone buzz against her back pocket. Tension and arguments always made her knot up. It wasn't anything she could control any longer. When people argued, she just got quiet and sick. She pulled the phone out and read the message on the screen.
