We're Turning You In

Lucky's hot eyes stared at nothing in particular, and all she could replay in her head were the heartbeats that stopped. Dread washed over her like an old friend, and she just didn't have the energy to push it away. All she had the energy to do...was lay on the bed where she awoke.

"Damn it," Helix groaned, but it wasn't directed at Lucky. He was busy staring out of the window and watching Sean carry his daughter off to god knew where in his head. Not only did he have Sarah, he also knew that he was plotting against him. Leave it to Sean to figure things out that fast. At least he never caught on to Cedric. He supposed it couldn't be helped. Both King and Sean were going to be looking for him—which meant he didn't have much time with Lucky.

"They're gonna go straight for Earth at least," Helix sighed to himself. "At least all of their eyes are off of The Kingdom for now. We should have a little time."

"Huh?" Lucky's eyes opened wide, and for the first time since she'd awakened, she realized that she was not in the company of her allies. "Helix!"

"The one and only," he smiled at her from across the room. He watched as she struggled to sit up. She was much too weak to move which meant she would only be good for one or two bursts at the most. He'd still taken the time to at least tie her feet together. He could always suppress her as long as he was near her. The ropes on her feet just ensured that a little more.

"Where's Lilly?" Lucky asked as she bolted up right, stood to her feet, and tripped back down to the floor all in one go.

"Stop," Helix sighed, "You're going to hurt yourself, kid. Listen up. I've got a proposition for you."

"Proposition?"

"Yeah. It's about King," Helix said. He pronounced each word with care. It wouldn't do to set her off. It also had to go down perfectly. If he wanted to use Lucky to get to King's father, this was his one and only shot.

"King?" Lucky said as she pushed herself back off of the floor and stood. "Is he alright?"

"Yes," Helix said, "and no."

"What's wrong? What's wrong with King? Where is he? Where are we? What did you do to him?"

"Cool your jets, kid," Helix said. "I haven't done anything to King. Quite the opposite. I want to help King, and I had to get you away from him to talk to you about it. You're the only one who can help him, Lucky. He's going to need you, but you know how King is. He isn't going to want to involve you."

Lucky's mind went back to the last time she saw him—in the hallway before she and Lilly bolted off to Earth. I didn't want to believe it was all. She remembered how his face looked when he said that—how dark his eyes were. Just don't do anything stupid, please, for my sake. But, she had done something stupid. Lilly was hurt. She wasn't just hurt, she was broken. Cedric was dead, and she was tied up somewhere in The Kingdom next to Helix.

"I know," she sighed. "He never wants me to put things...at risk."

"He's right," Helix said, "but it's not you putting others at risk. It's King's own father."

Lucky sat down on the bed. She didn't have the strength to try and run, and even if she did, she knew Helix would just suppress her powers. It was all he had to do, and besides, he was actually making some sense for a change. King's dad was one of the only things she'd ever seen change King. His eyes never got that dark before.

"Why does he hate him so much? What did he do to him?"

"I don't imagine he's said very much about him, has he?" Helix began. "King's real father is more than just an immortal, Lucky. He is a god. King was supposed to take on that power, but he wanted nothing to do with it."

"He hasn't said much about his real father," Lucky admitted. "Just that he's dangerous."

"And he's absolutely right," Helix said with a deepened frown.

"I don't...even know his name," Lucky whispered.

"Keep it that way for now," Helix sighed. "Let's talk about Sean."

"King's adopted dad?" Lucky asked.

"Yeah," Helix shrugged. "I guess he calls him that. He got his powers from King's mother, and she got them from his father."

"He doesn't like either of them," Lucky sighed. "You'd think he'd at least like Sean. You know, for taking him in."

"Well, having the power to control life changed his heart. Sean used to be a smart, very caring man. He was hard on his children—harder on them than anyone else. There's a reason King grew up to be the strong man that he is. I can't say that I know everything, but I know enough. He's taken my daughter. I know...," Helix grit his teeth, " I know I haven't been the best father, but Sarah. She's my weakness, and he knows it. He's taken my Sarah, Lucky. It's going to end. He's going to die. I already told King, and now I'm telling you. I'm planning to overthrow my so-called master, and I need to know if you're in or out."

Lucky stared at Helix's tear-rimmed eyes and wondered how much of it was true. Could the same man who scared Sarah so much have so much love for her? She watched a tear fall down his cheek, and for a moment, his eyes were as dark as King's was the night she left. Still, Helix was talking about killing Liz's dad. She couldn't come to terms with the fact that she'd killed a low-life like Cedric, and here he was asking her to help do it again. She couldn't. She wasn't a killer.

"I can't," she stammered. "I can't. I can't kill anyone. I didn't kill anyone. I don't want to kill anyone."

"But you did kill someone!" Helix yelled. He slammed his hands down on the bed beside her, straddled her so that he could see into her eyes—putting his bare hand on her throat to keep her power in check. "You killed someone, Lucky. You're a killer whether you like it or not. You can live with that and start killing the right people, or I can turn you in for what you've done. You can sit behind bars and watch King die. Sean is coming for King. I know. Don't you think I know what he's doing? I served under him. What will you do when he comes? Will you give King up without a fight...because you can't kill anyone? Bull shit. You're already a killer, Lucky. I'm not going to sit by and let him take my daughter. I'm not going to sit by and watch Sarah get hurt by him—the way he's hurt so many others. I'm taking The Master of Death down. Are you in or out? What's it gonna be!"

"I...," Lucky gripped his hand with both of hers. She wanted to look away, but he wouldn't let her. She couldn't move. Did Sean really have Sarah? "Why does he want to do so many bad things?"

"He's just a bad guy," Helix said, "and sometimes, good people have to stop bad people."

What was she supposed to do? She wasn't even sure she could stop someone's heart again if she tried. It was all an accident. She didn't even know what she was doing.

"No one is just a bad guy," Lucky said quietly.

Helix moved off of her and stared at her from beneath his bangs. She just wasn't ready to kill him. It wasn't going to work that way. She was able to kill immortals, but she didn't taste revenge. He didn't have the time to brainwash her into it, either. King's real father would be there soon, and getting to Sean would be the least of their worries. By then, it would be too late.

"Alright," he said as he bent down to untie her feet. He would make it work some way. He just needed more time. He couldn't do things the right way knowing that both Sean and King were going to be showing up at his door step any moment. They weren't idiots, after all. He had to get Lucky somewhere no one would think to look for her—until he could improvise. "C'mon, let's go."

"Where?" Lucky gasped as he pulled her to her feet beside him.

"We're turning you in for murder...just like I promised."

"To who? My brother?" Lucky asked.

"No, to the police...on Earth, smart ass."
