personality + fears

When making a personality, it can be hard, I know.

But just like us, your character needs to have flaws. Don't make them some perfect goody two shoes that always gets perfect grades and never does anything wrong. No, just, no.

When making a personality I personally think of my friends or myself. Or maybe you can base your character's personality on an existing fictional character? That could work too.

I based Tristan's personality on JD from the Heathers musical and I based Leizel's personality on Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls and a mixture of Adrien's personality from Miraculous Ladybug.

Don't make your character all rainbows and sunshines too! Make them have those dark days as well. And please don't do this just to make readers to take pity on your character, an example of this is that the character is all happy and cheerful and then she suddenly bursts out crying because she remember her oh so tragic backstory? Please don't do this. You may think it's cool but it's not.

Try to make it realistic, make them feel happy at the previous chapter and then at the next chapter something just came up and she's all sad and gloomy now but she hides it.

Not balanced personality: perfectionist, lazy, neat freak, kind, short tempered

Balanced personality:
perfectionist, neat freak, serious, reserved, cunning

And for god's sake make them have fears! Don't let their only fear be loosing their loved ones! Make them fear heights, spiders, drowning, closed spaces, the unknown, death, dolls, clowns, horses, or even the dark! Seriously, we all have a fear of loosing someone but don't make that their only fear! Heck, I claim that I'm not scared of anything (it's just to boost up my confidence) but I'm scared with lots of things-

Even my edgy BBB OC, Tristan, has fears!

You can make it ironic, too! You can look at Percy Jackson for example: he's the son of Poseidon, the sea god. He can literally control and breath underwater but later on in the books he developed a fear of drowning. (that's what my cousin said,,,)

Maybe they're the perfectionist type and is afraid of failure? Because lots of people can relate to that, even me.

Or maybe they're the extremely cautious ones that are afraid of death?
Just start thinking and ask yourself this: what are you scared of? You can base your OC's fears of your fears, too!

Next up I'll be talking about self inserts and how to make it work--
