I'm just gonna say it here in the beginning— I am a sucker for backstories.
Backstories explain why your OC is like that in the first place, backstories are what your OC is.
You want to make a normal backstory? Go ahead, a sad one? Sure, I won't mind.
When I was making Leizel's backstory I didn't made it entirely dramatic, the only thing dramatic that ever happened in her backstory was her brother's death. That's it. Leizel is just a rich girl that has problems just like everyone else.
You can make a depressing backstory for your OC, go ahead! But don't make it too cliche tho. Of course, cliches are impossible to dodge when it comes to make OCs, even Leizel can be a cliche character sometimes in my story. (example: caring too much, clumsiness, etc.) But having a single cliche in your OC's backstory is not bad.
If you want your OC's parents to be dead then go for it, just don't make them like: "loool my parents are dead pls love me Boboiboy and Fang I need luv"
The death of their parents or any loved ones of your OCs should not be used just to get attention to the main characters, sure, they can pity them but just don't over do it.
Edgy or depressing backstories can be hard to write, when writing Tristan's backstory I had to redo a lot of things over and over again. Tristan isn't super smart without a reason, no, his father made him study 24/7 and abuse him if he didn't saw his son studying, this was after the death of his mother that made his father like this and that's why he's an asshole.
Antonio's backstory is pretty depressing as well. Before he died in a motorcycle accident he lived a pretty terrible life where he started to cut himself just to relieve the pain and sometimes even drink just to make his pain go away. This was the cause of his pressure to help his family and pushing himself to the limits so that their business won't fall down. And this was also the cause of the whole rich-family-perfect-image thing that it got to the point where his father started to hit him whenever he disobeys or anything that will likely to ruin the family's name. But after he died Mr. Cruz got slapped real hard in the face by reality.
And sure, you might be thinking that Antonio is a cheerful guy or spirit that loves to make jokes every now and then in my story that's because he's hiding it all in from everyone. Think of like how Sans hid his depression from everyone in the game and how 707 masked his pain by jokes and memes.
A good oc ≠ edgy backstory.
Yes, you can make one or two of your OC's backstories edgy but take note that edgy backstories are literally everywhere now. So don't over do it.
Just because your OC has an edgy backstory doesn't mean they're a good character.
A cliche backstory includes:
>one or more dead family members
>abuse
>being part of a royal family (OC being a princess) without even knowing it and revealing it in the end.
>an experiment because why not
>murdering their own parents or any adults powerful than them
And the list goes on.
(an example of a cliche backstory: Bloom from Winx Club //lol idc if you guys bash me for that majority of their characters are mary sues)
To make this short: make 👏 sure 👏 the 👏 backstory 👏 makes 👏 sense.
Not sure if this chapter was helpful or not..
