Ch. 22 Sam

The quiet tick of a clock bounces around my small office while I sort through the intake files. Shiloe, Willow, and John. My eyes drift to the window. Outside a roil of clouds is just cresting the distant peaks. Below Lily sits with Christine chatting. Probably about the future again. Poor Todd, if he only knew. I chuckle softly and turn back to the paperwork. And poor Willow. My mind replays the fire. The heat of it was nearly unbearable. Though once Violet had contained Willow the fire had nearly all disappeared.
I write a couple notes under her picture. Abilities evolve in the most bizarre ways. My own power is still changing. Getting stronger and more unique. A far cry from the beginning.
"Stay in your seat!" The memory screams at me.
"I'm trying!" My younger self cries.
"Not hard enough! From now on you will stand."
Ironically enough that evil woman helped me nurture my ability to the astounding degree of control I now have.
Curse her for it.
I flip to the next file.
John. Cocky and he can fly.
"Is Willow, okay?" His voice had broken, but his eyes never wavered from the bubble cradling his unconscious sister.
"Good kid." I say aloud. The clock ticks and tocks and I grab the next file.
Shiloe. Appears to've had an early onset of enhanced physical abilities. Been in sports since her very beginning. Probably to cut down on her energy. Her poor parents.
I snicker as I remember the dandelion forest Christine had grown in her bedroom. She'd gotten lost in them. Her watery smile broke my heart when I walked through them as I would air and scooped her into my arms. I wipe the tears from my eyes and pin them to Shiloe's file.
Her ready acceptance of her abilities and the current situation have been excellent. I make some notes and close all the files. "Its nice that not everyone fights me." My mind drifts to Faith. As I slide the files into their folders I send out a hope that she is okay and finding some peace.
