Welcome to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
I looked at the sign post ahead and sighed as we approached the gate. This was going to be a long day.
Mummy works as a non academic staff here and my brother and I are students here but in very different faculties and am really happy about that.
I removed the earphone as mummy showed the security personnel her staff ID after which he gave her a tally for her vehicle and gestured her to move on. Mummy drove me to science village where I came down, thanked her and went to the laboratory where we would have our first lecture.
This is my daily routine on Mondays and trust me its better than cycling to school on a Monday generally because it is the busiest day in school and lectures begin by eight in the morning and end at five in the evening with no break, well, except a lecturer comes late to his or her class or doesn't come at all.
As I entered the already filled lab, I searched for a seat and when I finally found one, I took it to the back of the class and set my stuffs there.
Yeah, am not the very social type and the fact that I have NO friend proves it. If you ask me, nobody wants to be with me. Am not complaining but it sometimes hurts being alone.
"Jay, what's up!" Chris hollered
Chris is my worst nightmare here. I dunno why or how but I think he derives joy and pleasure in bullying me with words and in very few occasions he went physical with me. He was my friend in our 100 level but he deserted me like everyone else does and ever since has made it his duty to make the whole world know of my social status.
"Fine." I answered
"Yeah sure, you are always fine."
I didn't reply. For heaven's sake, I didn't even know what to reply.
"I hope you behave today," he continued when I gave him no reply, "and where is my copy of the assignment?" He asked in more of a whisper.
I looked at him and tears started gathering in my eyes.
'I can't believe I actually considered this devil as a friend at a point in my life'. I fetched his copy from my bag and gave it to him.
"Here" I told him as I handed the paper to him
"Why are you giving it to me? Submit it to the course rep." He shouted.
I was actually surprised by his outburst but didn't really mind. I brought out my copy and set it on the desk. I started assembling my stuffs back because, well I don't like my things scattered, I mean, no one does, right?
"Chris, have you done the assignment?" A very fair lady I remember being addressed as Chioma asked him in a way too lovely manner.
Chris quickly grabbed his copy of the assignment from my desk and handed it to her. Let's just say that Chris was the ladies man. I can bet that every girl in my department knows him too well and are possibly his friends. I give it to him that he's handsome and actually good looking but he's the epitome of the saying that all that glitters are not gold.
They both left but not without Chris giving me that infamous glare that I think should scare me and keep me in place. At least I have my space to myself now.
I looked around in search of the course rep and submitted my assignment to him when I found him. Not long after I sat back down, our first lecturer came in.
