feat. Heart on Fire by Jonathan Clay
Weeks have already passed by since the night I ran away with Chase. I cut all my communications. I changed my number because I still need a phone where Chase can contact me if we are not together. I deactivated my Facebook account. I never opened my email. I did not even tell Mitty where I was.
Chase told me that nobody close to us knows where he is living right now except his Dad. I have no idea how he convinced his Dad about letting us stay in their condominium unit, and how he told his Dad not to tell anybody our whereabouts.
“Just make sure to lock the doors okay?” Chase said while he is fixing himself for work. “I checked the refrigerator and cabinet earlier. We only have a few stocks left even though I just bought stocks the other day. Let’s go to the grocery together later okay?”
“Okay.” I said to him. I gave him his jacket. He needs it because he said it is very cold in their office. “Drive safely babe.”
“Yes I will.” He kissed my cheeks. “I’ll see you later. I love you.”
The reason why the food stock is getting low is because I have been secretly practicing cooking. Tomorrow will be Chase’s birthday. I can’t think of any other good birthday present for him except for the food that I will be cooking for tomorrow. Gladly our housekeeper, who only goes by day, taught me some basics and she offered to taste test my food. She is also the one who take away the excess food I cook.
I am not that bored because I use the time for reading books, painting, watching, cooking and many more. Chase just let me do whatever things I wanted to do as long as I stay inside.
I am not in the mood to do something so I just lay on our sofa. I looked at my watch. It is only half past three in the afternoon. I closed eyes until I fall asleep.
“Babe, wake up.” I heard Chase’s sweet voice. I slowly open my eyes after I felt Chase’s lips on mine.
“Welcome home Babe.”
“Get dress now. We are going to the supermarket, right?” he asked.
I smiled at him and I got up. I kissed him lightly on his cheeks before I went to our room. I hurriedly changed my outfit. For my disguise, I wore glasses. We always wore something that does not tell people around us who we really are. We are like living beneath the shadows.
“Have you brought our shopping bags?” Chase asked me.
“Yes Babe.”
We went to the closest supermarket. Chase told me to get everything we need for a week or two. I happily get first all the ingredients I needed for Chase’s favorite foods. I placed them in the shopping carts. I don’t know if Chase could read minds but he asked me, “you frequently buy those vegetables and meat yet I don’t see some of them on our table.”
“Is that so? I thought we already ate those.” I lied to him.
Afterwards, we went to a restaurant and we ordered take out. Chase thinks we are already both exhausted so we rather eat at home.
Chase and I didn’t talk much as we arrive home. We are both hungry and exhausted. We are just happy that we could spend tomorrow as much as we want because he filed a leave, just for his birthday. We decided to sleep early so that we can enjoy his special day.
I woke up 4 in the morning. I took a bath and went to the kitchen. There should be enough time for me to prepare my first gift, the breakfast in bed. I cooked one of Chase’s favorites, the omurice. I mixed in vegetables and chicken and rice. I added salt, pepper, soy sauce and ketchup. I mixed the egg with milk then made the omelet. I carefully place the rice at the center of the egg and rolled it so that it looks like a football. I wrote the words ‘happy birthday’ using the ketchup. I placed the omurice on a serving tray along with the black coffee I prepared for him.
