Chapter 17

“I would like to thank each and every one of you who attended this masquerade party. I know that this theme seemed a bit odd to some of you but, I would like to give a little twist in this event. As most of you know that the company is doing great for the past years. And it keeps on getting better and better this year. I would like to thank my father who supported me in fulfilling my dreams even though there were some misunderstandings back when I was in college.”

I could hear some people murmur as this Mr. B stopped at the moment.

“I know that many were shocked when the merging of the company with a certain big company was not pushed through. Even though the media already spread gossips about the merging, my decision is still intact that the deal has to call off.”

The whispers are getting louder and louder. I am getting curious with this matter.

“Supported by my father, I am firm with my thoughts and actions. Yes, we lost the opportunity to have a more successful business but I will never give up the opportunity to live a happy life.”

Silence filled the place. Every single person in the venue started to pay attention to the speaker.

“First of all, I would like to thank the people behind this event. To the event organizer who tried her very best to cover her mouth until this night. You could tell everything to the world when the party is over. To my friends who encouraged me to fight ‘til the end. I really thought I got no chance. Thank you to the people whom I talked to, for allowing me to do this thing. Your blessing is very much needed.”

Mr. B looked at his watch and said, “oh, look at the time. It’s almost 2 minute left until midnight. I bet all of you are wondering why we started very late. The truth is the party is for tomorrow. I wanted all of you to countdown with me. Let’s wait for the numbers on screen.”

20… 19… 18… 17… 16… 15… 14… 13… 12… 11… 10… 9… 8… 7… 6… 5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

The people in the venue clapped as a big greeting was flashed on the projector.

“Happy birthday, Samantha Crestheart. I hope you like my surprise.”

The man slowly took off his mask. Mr. B is indeed the one and only Mr. Baskerville, Chase Baskerville.

“Before all of you can take off your masks, I would like to call on first the beautiful woman who is celebrating her 27th birthday on stage.”

Chase walked down the stage to fetch me from the table. He held my hand as we stand in front of the crowd.

Two waiters pushed a cart with a big birthday cake with candles. Then background music was played. The guests sang along.

 “Please make a wish first before blowing the candles.”

I took off my mask. I closed my eyes and wished. These wished were also wished by Chase eight years ago. Maybe if I wished these again, the wish will be even stronger and will eventually come true.

I opened my eyes and blew the candles. The guests clapped.

“What did you wish?” Chase asked me.

“It’s a secret.”

“Sorry everybody, it seems she doesn’t want to share her wishes to us.”

Awww… the crowd said.

I was about to leave the stage. I can’t bear anymore stress from the people I don’t even know.
