Chapter 14

Kirk drove as fast as he could. We went back to Manila instead of going around Batangas. And here we are now at the hospital.

“Mom where’s Esahc?” I asked my mom as soon as I saw her.

Mom, Kirk and I went to Esahc. The doctor is also at the room.

“Are you the mother?”

“Yes doctor. What is his condition doctor?”

“I can’t tell it for now. We have to undergo him in various tests. But my initial finding shows that your son has a weak heart.”

“What?”

“We should probably wait for more test results. I will be leaving you for now.”

The doctor left us in the room. I was frozen on my position. I think I am going crazy.

“Everything will be alright.” Kirk hugged me. “Remember that I am always here for you and Esahc.”

My tears started to flow nonstop.

Night came. Kirk and I were at the hospital hallway. I still can’t believe that my son is admitted here.

“I will do anything just to save my son. He is the main reason why I kept on living.” I started to cry again.

Kirk patted me on my shoulder.

“Sam.” I heard a faint voice from a distant. I raised my head to see who’s there. I found Chase at the end of the hallway. He started to walk towards me. His steps are getting faster and faster until he made his way in front of me.

“Where’s our son?” he said in a cracked voice.

I stood up, grabbed his hand and dragged him inside a room where Esahc laid.

“Chase?” my mom was a bit shock when he saw Chase with me.

“Mom, go home now. Just go back here tomorrow.”

My mom nodded and left us.

Chase slowly approached Esahc. He held his hand and kissed it. “Esahc, papa’s here. Please be strong. I will never leave you.” I saw Chase’s tears rolling on his cheeks. The last time I saw him cry was the time I was taken away from him. And he is crying again because Esahc is in danger of being taken away from us.

“Mama,” Esahc said.

“Yes baby? Mama’s here.” I wiped my tears as I go near Esahc.

“Why are you crying?”

I don’t know what to tell Esahc. I don’t want to tell him the bad news that he has a sickness or something. “Mama’s not crying. In fact mama is happy.” I kissed Esahc on his forehead.

“Who is he?”

I looked at Chase. Chase looked back at me. Shall I tell Esahc that he is his father?

I cleared my throat. “He is…”

“I’m your mama’s friend. I just paid your mama a visit.” Chase cut me.

Esahc gave a faint smile.

“Just rest some more, baby. Everything will be alright.”

A few minutes later, Esahc fell asleep again. I asked Chase why he didn’t want me to tell Esahc the truth.

“I am still fixing important things. I can’t afford to carry issues regarding this. I am telling you that you have to wait for me. And also trust me no matter what. I cannot tell you the issues because I wanted both of you out of the trouble. I love you both and I will never let anyone take you two away from me.”

Will I trust this man? Why does he need to hide things from me? What is his problem? Those were some questions running in my mind at that point of time. I really didn’t understand why he keeps these things in secret.

“I have to go now. I will try to visit as soon as I got the chance. Remember that I love you and I will get you both.” Chase kissed me lightly on my forehead and took off.

Esahc was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. The doctor gave medications which Esahc will be taking. He said that we should try the medications first. But if there was no progress, surgery is the last option we had.

“I hope everything will be alright.” My tears started to fall down again.

“Everything is going to be alright. I know that.” Kirk hugged me.

“I am very thankful for everything that you have done to me… and Esahc. I don’t know how to repay you. You have spent a lot of time with us.”

“I am not asking for something in return.” Kirk took a deep breath. “Well, technically.”

“I think I would even grow to like you if I continue to see you…” I wiped my tears using hands. “If only… If only I don’t have someone else in here already.” I said pointing to my chest.

“I know. It’s Chase.”

“I’m such a fool, waiting for somebody who told me to wait even though I am not sure if he is going to really come back.” I gave Kirk a weak smile. “Esahc will be discharged today. I wouldn’t want to bother you anymore so you can go now. I can manage to bring my son home.”

“But…”

“My dad is going to pick us up. Just go on and do your job. I know that you missed some of the days. I cannot pay your leave so please go back to your job and just visit if you really are available.”

“Okay I will. But let me talk first to the little man.”

Kirk and I went where Esahc is staying. He is already on a wheelchair.

“Uncle Kirk!” Esahc shouted.

“Hey little guy, don’t get too excited okay. Your mama will get nervous and all if you shout like that.”

“Okay.”

“Promise me that you will be a good boy.”

“Yes Uncle Kirk.” Esahc gave him a big smile.

“I have to say bye now. Uncle Kirk still has to work. Be strong okay?”

“Yes Uncle Kirk.”

Kirk gave Esahc a hug and he bade farewell to Esahc and finally to me.
