After Henry had left, the two girls ran over to comfort Eddie, leaving Richie in an uncomfortable position. Eddie, however, made it clear that Richie was the one who'd saved him.
"Yeah, Richie saved me." He said, half smiling at the boy. "Thank you." Richie shrugged, hating the idea of anything carrying too much emotion.
"I hope you don't mind, I just wanna make sure he's okay." Beverly turned and smiled sweetly at Richie. Why the hell would I mind? Richie thought to himself.
"You two are so cute together," Elle smiled. Richie's mind was running with ideas.
Elle began telling jokes you'd hear from a third grader and led the way out from in between the two cabins. The four stood in front of Richie and Eddie's cabin for a minute in silence before it happened.
"Would you two want to come hang out in our room?" Beverly asked them. Richie's eyes nearly bulged out of his head at her question. Eddie mirrored his reaction with a gulp.
"Y-yeah." Eddie choked out, cursing himself for picking up Bill's speaking habits.
"Actually, we have stuff to do. You know, gotta make sure Eds here is taken care of. Maybe next time, thanks." Richie frantically waved them off. Eddie was looking at him like a madman.
Richie quickly grabbed Eddie by the wrist, pulling him closer to whisper in his ear. "I think, they think we're a couple."
Eddie pulled away, mortified. He turned towards the girls who were fonding over the pair.
"We're what?" He shrieked. Elle chuckled.
"You've been mistaken. Girls, I'm not-" Richie threw his hand over Eddie's mouth to shut him up in time.
"Feeling too good, better get him back to our room. Really nice hanging out. Let's do this again. Bye." Richie said before pulling Eddie's flailing body into their cabin.
"What the hell, Tozier. I'm not gay." The shorter protested once they were behind closed doors. Richie only rolled his eyes.
"It doesn't matter," he began pacing the room, "think about it. No girl has ever spoken to you besides your mom."
"Shut up."
"And now you've got two inviting you to their cabin. This could really work for us." Richie explained.
"What, you mean pretend we're dating?" Eddie frowned.
"Only for the summer, we can play it up at camp and the girls will be coming over left and right." Eddie shook his head at the other boy's words.
"Not everything is about sex, you know?" Eddie crossed his arms, uncomfortable with using a fake sexuality to get girls to notice him. What would his mother think?
"Fine, it doesn't need to be about the girls. You saw what I did out there. I can protect you. From Henry." Richie stopped in front of Eddie now. "Win, win."
"No way this will work! We don't even like each other!" Eddie rubbed the side of his head, frustratedly.
"We don't have to. Think of it as acting. C'mon, who hasn't wanted to be in a movie at our age. It's just pretend." Richie widened his eyes, attempting to convince the boy.
It took a few minutes of thinking but Eddie finally looked up at him. "I'm in."
"So it's official." Eddie nodded.
"Will you be my boyfriend?" Richie chuckled.
"Let's be gay." Eddie shrugged.
