Thursday. July 9, 1987
It was a sunny day that felt out of place among all the darkness that was looming around the children of Derry summercamp. Though, this was unbeknownst to the temporary residents of such camp. Hormone-filled, impulsive, irresponsible teens and children alike, as if. It was summer. That was all that mattered. Thus, an activity day was implemented.
Bill, one of Derry Summercamp's very own hormone-filled, impulsive, irresponsible teens, was sat across from one equally hormone-filled, impulsive, irresponsible teen, Stanley Uris on that sunny day. The pair watched each other, under the glistening sunrays. aimlessly painting on the wooden table of the camp center rather than the paper that was provided to them.
Every few moments, they'd glance around at all the counselors who had yet to see their work. Then they'd laugh and exchange wide smiles before remembering they were in public. It was somehow agreed upon that they weren't willing to tell the world about their relationship just yet. It was new and they were still only kids, unaware that the opinion of the world is only as valid as you let it be. They had years of struggle ahead of them if they kept their true selves a secret for too long.
"I'm feeling a little tired." Stan held back a grin as he spoke. Bill nodded, looking around at the miscellaneous kids by their sides. He sat there, as Stan began to stand up. They exchanged one last glance and Stan walked away. Bill smiled softly, to himself as he stared down at the table. He took a moment to appreciate the sound of birds chirping, it was almost mouse-like the way they squeaked against the warm summer wind. In his head, he imagined a dramatic orchestral build, growing louder to the quickening rate of his heartbeat as he got an idea. Bill gathered his thoughts and began to collect a handful of paints in his hand. He watched his surroundings as he snagged the last color of paint he needed, along with a few ribbons from the craft table. Once all his new items were in his pockets, he began walking back to his cabin where he knew Stan was waiting for him.
He took the long trail, hoping to muster up the right words to make Stan's day along the way. He passed the camp center, where he saw a few kids playing outside. He tuned into their babble and bicker but all he captured was someone announcing a phone call for Nancy. He sauntered on, finally arriving at the cabin.
He reached for the door handle but it swung open before him. In the doorway stood Stanley with a grin, looking like he was over the moon to see him. Bill couldn't resist, reaching forward but Stanley pulled him inside and closed the door before Bill could make his move. Bill wanted to be annoyed by that but now he had Stanley all to himself and he was overjoyed.
"H-hey, you," Bill smiled. Stan smiled back, poking Bill's stomach.
"Hey," Stan's spider fingers drifted across Bill's stomach and underarms and the other boy could not stop laughing. "You," Stan continued to tickle his boyfriend, the pair savoring their time to have fun and escape the world.
Eventually Bill fell on the floor with laughter, letting a few things slip from his pockets in the process. Stan furrowed his eyebrows but helped the boy up.
"What's all that, Bill," He questioned. Bill blushed. He had been saving it for later, he explained.
"I have a gift for you. For us." Bill began emptying his pockets on the desk where he took a sit.
Stan stood next to him, watching intently. Bill grabbed a ribbon off the table and measured it against Stan's wrist. He then grabbed some paint.
"I r-read in the newspaper something about a place in California where some guy made a flag f-for people," Bill paused, painting a red stripe onto the ribbon. "A flag for people l-like us."
Stan was silent. Bill began to worry as he turned to look at Stan but Stan leaned close and gave him a kiss. He stood back up and squeezed Bill's shoulders, urging him to continue.
"Yeah, so it's supposed to be like a rainbow, super colorful and beautiful. Li-Like our love. And-" Bill retrieved another color; orange, not yet realizing what he had said. However, behind him Stan's heart was racing.
"Our love?" Stan tried to hide a smirk. Bill's eyes widened, suddenly grasping his own words.
"I-I uhm," Bill turned around and stared up at Stan from his chair and gulped. "I j-just think, you know. I've never-never felt this way about anyone. I mean I'm always excited to see you. Always. I wake up in the morning, you're there, I'm happy. I never get tired of looking into your eyes. Feeling your hair on my cheek and I hope that doesn't sound so creepy, I don't know but I am just always excited to be with you and it's kind of amazing. So I guess," Bill took a deep breath.
"I love you," Stanley finished.
"Yes," Bill said, then he smiled so wide he knew his cheeks would hurt later.
"Cool," Stan leaned down for another quick kiss and they were two happy clams.
They enjoyed their day, both exchanging ribbon bracelets. Both a shade of blue but on the inside, had rainbow stripes painted in. It was so their colors could remain on them every day, whether or not the world could see it or not.
"I love them," Stan sighed happily.
"I love you," Bill mumbled.
"I love saying love," Stan added.
"I love-," Then, a knock at the door.
The boys groaned, Stan walked over and wrenched the door open, annoyed. What he saw made him freeze and look back at Bill immediately. Bill frowned, and began walking to the door. He and Stan looked out the door. Before them, stood Butch Bowers in his chief uniform. Behind him was Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington.
"Son, we have something to tell you about your brother," Butch spoke in a dull tone.
Bill's first instinct was to reach for Stanley's hand but he resisted the urge.
"Why don't we talk inside." With that, they were inside. Bill closed his eyes and the door shut behind them.
