2005, July 10: Annabeth thrust her hand into the surf at age 7, grabbing the boy that had been under longer than any human could've been. He swam in with her, glaring at being saved. "Why were you under there for so long?" Annabeth questioned after they had reached sand.
"I was looking at the fish." The boy said, his eyes downcast. "And then I followed them, and now I don't know where my mom is. Have you seen anyone that looks like her?" He sniffled.
"Do you know her cell phone number?" Annabeth asked, leading him to the life guard.
"No," he said.
"Well, tell him what she looks like, ok?"
"Ok."
As it turned out, there was no need to do this because at the lifeguard stand there was a stressed middle-aged woman with brown hair and a kind expression fixed in the wrinkles upon her face.
"Where's my son?" She was demanding. "He has black hair, green eyes, an olive complexion, and a blue surf suit. Please find him. His name is Percy."
Percy ran up to her and gave her a hug. "Mommy! Guess what! I found some fish with pretty colors and big blobs and long strings like the ribbons you sew with. There were a bunch of them. They all gathered around me, but I told them I didn't have any food and they went away. Can I have a blue cookie?" He said in a rush.
"Excuse me, ma'am," Annabeth started, tapping Percy's mom. "I can't find my mom either. She went to the store and she said she would be back in ten minuites. It's been a day. Can I stay with you for a little bit?" She asked, tears in her eyes.
"Yeah mom, can she? She pulled me out of the water when the pretty fish thingies started coming back after I told them to go away."
"I don't see why not," said his mom, smiling . "Dear, you must be starving. We have a picnic laid out, if you would like to join us."
"Yes please, Mrs..."
"Jackson. But you can call me Sally."
"I'm Annabeth."
"Can I call you Sally, mom?" Percy broke in. Sally laughed and shook her head. "No," she replied. "You can call me Mom."
"Ok," Percy said brightly, and they left.
2015,the day before Percy's 17th birthday: Percy was in the middle of a surfing competition. It was against his best friend, Grover and some stereotypical beach blonde, but her eyes ruined the image. They were gray, the kind of grey that the storm clouds over the ocean were.
The contest was done by elimination. After each wave, a contestar was eliminated. Simple.
Percy knew that surfing was his element. The ocean seemed to obey him, the animals in it left him alone.
Grover wiped out and was eliminated. Now it was a contest between Beach Blonde and him. He and Beach Blonde paddled into the waves, each using expert strokes to move them along. They were right beside each other when they caught a wave. Bringing it home, Percy started doing tricks on his board. Then the ocean calmed before they reached shore and the contest was over, Beach Blonde and him tying. Afterwards, he went up to her and shook her hand. "Congratulations. I'm Percy Jackson." She looked like a deer in headlights.
"Annabeth Chase." Now Percy felt like a deer. "You mean the lost-on-the-beach-couldn't-find-her-mother-saved-me-from-jellyfish-and-stayed-at-my-house-for-two-weeks Annabeth?"
"That'd be me."
"Cool. Hey, since it's calm, do you want to go sit out on the ocean?"
"Love to. Let me grab my board."
