It had been exactly two weeks since Ms. Harper saw Jay, but Mrs. Braden happily kept her updated on her son's progress. Luckily, Jay only had a minor fracture of his fibula, but in his case, it was a very painful one. He should be back in classes the start of next week.

She sat at her desk, consumed with grading papers from her sophomore class. Truth be told, Ms. Harper felt funny without having Jay around - like something was missing.

"Hey Ms. Harper," Jay said poking his head in while leaning on one crutch.

"Jay! You're back? How are you feeling?" She asked as her eyes landed on large grey boot hugging his lower left leg beside a brown grocery bag on the floor. Seeing him actually brightened up her day. She stared back at the young man from the table.

He acknowledged her glance, "Yeah, I'll be wearing this for a couple more weeks and I should be good to go."

"Well, that's still very wonderful! At least you're walking."

"Almost," he sighed as he motioned to his crutch under his arm.

"Well, that's major progress considering what you've been through. I'm sure you feel better..."

"I feel alright. You know, just hanging in there I guess." he shrugged.

Murmurs from nicely dressed groups of students distracted Ms. Harper, which sparked her memory. "Oh, you're here for the debate team semi-finals, arent' you?"

"Well," Jay glanced over his shoulder, taking a step towards her. "The truth is, they think I'm here for that," he tilted his head back, referring to the debate team. "But I lied. I came back to see you." He looked up at her.

     "Oh?"

"I never got the chance to say thanks for taking me to the hospital and just...for being there for me...and dealing with me. You didn't have to do that, so, thank you, Ms. Harper. This is for you." He pulled a flower arrangement from the brown bag he was carrying and presented it to her.
