In the car...
Heather and Gladys sat in the back while I sat in the front with Scott, who apparently could drive. In my opinion, he couldn't drive all that well though... We swerved around all of the corners and ran a few red lights, but I guess he could be worse...
We (somehow) arrived to Scott's old house in one piece and parked really badly in the driveway. Gladys pretty much flew out of the car and zipped into the house while Heather had to literally be dragged into the house by yours truly.
Scott seemed conflicted between running away and sprinting inside, as he kept turning slightly every couple seconds. He stopped at the front door and looked like he was about to grab my arm or something, but then he decided against it and went inside with me.
I tossed Heather onto the couch as best I could, and as soon as she landed on the couch she stuffed her face into the couch cushions and started mumbling something really quietly.
Gladys was zooming around, beeping things to herself, perhaps about how messy it was in the house, while Dr. Price and Scott were having a very heated conversation in the opposite corner of the room. They glanced up and saw me staring. Scott's face turned redder than it already was while Dr. Price just stared back, completely emotionless. He patted Scott on the back, to which he responded with a cold shoulder, and then he walked over to the coffee table between the couch and the TV.
Scott walked over to me and made me sit on the couch next to him. I stole a glance at his face and saw that it was still really red, and his eyes were a bit watery. What is going on? Why is everyone so upset? Hopefully I'll get my answer soon...
Dr. Price held up his hands as if trying to silence a crowd, even though the only people making noise weren't paying any attention.
"Gladys, come over here please," Dr. Price said, waving Gladys over. "And Heather? Please sit up..."
Heather groaned, but sat up to reveal a pink face and watery eyes.
Okay, if Heather's upset, I'm upset...
But I won't say anything. Not yet anyway...
Gladys angrily beeps her way over to Dr. Price's side. She crosses her little arms and glares invisible lasers into Dr. Price's head. He clears his throat and takes a step away from her, but she just gets even closer. He shakes his head and puts on a fake smile.
"Well, you're probably wondering why I gathered you all here today-"
"Yes!" I interject.
"Quit it with the formalities, dad. No one cares..." Scott says sourly.
Heather just sits quietly, sniffing every few minutes.
Gladys starts mumbling something to herself while her gaze somehow becomes harsher.
"Uh, okay... I'll just cut to the chase then. Carol, we need you to do something very important..."
I just quietly and await my quest.
Scott seems to be growling or something and Heather closes her eyes and leans back into the couch.
"Now, this won't be easy, nor will it probably end the way we hope it will, but it's for the good of the country. It's a very crucial matter that must be done correctly, or else-"
"Just tell her already!" Heather yells, standing up abruptly. She must have gotten light-headed from standing up so quickly, as she sinks back down shortly after.
"Okay. Carol, we need you to become the new Queen."
My eyes widen and I study everyone's faces.
Then I burst out laughing.
"Are you kidding right now? This is the most ridiculous joke I've ever heard!" I say, laughing hysterically. When no one else laughs with me, my laughter turns into a nervous chuckle and then ceases altogether. "Are... Are you not joking? You're serious?"
"Yes, we're serious..." Dr. Price says, eyeing me warily.
"What?! How am I supposed to even do that? Where do I begin? What do I do? What-"
"We'll help you all the way, Carol. You don't have to do it right now, but we should definitely do it sooner rather than later."
I sigh and look around at everyone one more time. I guess they're not joking...
"Well, why is this such a big deal? Well, I see why it's a big deal, but why is everyone so upset? I mean, I could like, give you guys really cool expensive stuff..." I say, smiling a little at the thought.
Everyone is completely silent.
"Carol..." Gladys starts. Dr. Price turns away, muttering something to himself. Heather scoots across the couch and sits right next to me, pretty much on top of me. "That's how your mom died... She tried to do the same thing, but she couldn't do it..."
