Chapter 4

Lily’s POV

Opening my eyes, I stare at the foreign room. Feeling scared I tumble off the cot in a heap letting out a cry at the pain that came from moving my body. A person rushes in the room at the sound.

Barely able to make out a shape I whimper in fright.

“It’s okay Lily, it’s just me Officer Katy.” I hear coming from the shape. I blink my eyes in agitation as the light is switched on making dots appear before them.

“Are you okay Lily?” Officer Katy asks me with worried eyes. I nod my head yes, as the events of the day come back to me.

“Is she really gone?” I ask in a whisper. I watch as she smiles a sad smile and just nods her head.

Feeling the tears start up again I hurriedly wipe them away. Crying won’t solve anything. They won’t bring back my mom. I can cry later tonight without an audience.

“Do you want to sit in front of my desk Lily?” She asks me. Nodding yes, I slowly get up from the floor. My body protests to the movement as I push it to doing something it doesn’t want to do.

The pain intensifies as I walk towards the desk that seemed like it had gotten farther away. My body collapsed with exhaustion when I sat in the chair.

“Your father will be here soon Lily.” Officer Katy tells me with a smile. The words bring a slight fear to me, what if he doesn’t like me. My whole life I never knew that I actually had a dad, but now I do and that scares me. I just hope he doesn’t beat me. Feeling a sudden wave of courage, I look up into Officer Katy’s eyes.

“What’s his name?” I ask her with curiosity in my voice.

“His name is Jake, and if I do say so myself he seems like a very nice guy.” She tells me with a smile. Nodding my head, I once again look at my feet.

Many people said that my step-dad was a nice person, but they never have to see the side I saw of him.

“A truck has pulled up, that may be him.” She tells me while looking at the door behind me. Sitting up straighter, I strain my ears to hear a noise.

Biting my bottom lip, I jump at the sound of the doors opening and people coming in. A warm gust of wind brushes over me from it. The footsteps stop once the door closes. Looking up to see Officer Katy’s reaction, I see that this is the person who I have been waiting for.

Winking at me, she motions for me to get up and look at him. Closing my eyes, I stand up and turn around. A silence overwhelms the police station as I stand there with my eyes closed tightly. Afraid to see something that may not be true.

Taking a deep breath, I open my eyes and see him staring straight back at me.

Jake’s POV

The breath left me as I stared at her. She was pretty, more than pretty. She had her mother’s looks, but I could see myself in her. Her eyes stared at me scared, no my eyes stared at me. That is all the proof that I need. This is my daughter.

Hearing a sob, I look over at Momma as she stands next to me. Tears crawl down her face as she stares at the girl.

“Hello you must be Mr. Sanders?” An officer says as she holds out her hand for me to shake.

Nodding my head in assurance I shake her hand.

“Why don't you two have a seat here in front of my desk and we will talk about the events that have led you here today.” The officer says as she indicates the two empty seats next to Lily’s.

Leading Momma to the chairs I sit down next to my daughter. A smile overcomes my features. I have a daughter.

Unable to resist I look over at her once again. Blonde hair covers her face as she stares at her feet. A growing curiosity towards this girl takes over. I might have not of known she existed a few hours ago, but now I knew and would never forget.

“As stated on the phone earlier today Mr. Sanders, we wish for you to take full custody over Lily.” The officer tells me with a smile.

Looking up at the officer I can't help but smile in response.

“I have every intention of taking Lily home with me today. Let’s just get this whole procedure done with so that she can finally be somewhere that bad memories do not stir.” Momma pats my leg at the words.

“My son is right; we need to get this girl fed and in bed before the day is over with.” Momma says to the officer with a bright smile upon her face.

“Alright. I have all of the papers ready; we just need you to sign. Also a person will come to the place of residence in a few weeks’ time to check up and make sure Lily is okay in your environment.” The officer says as she hands me the papers.

After a few minutes of signing papers and proving that I am who I am Lily is following me and Momma out of the police station.

Momma grabs Lily's hand as she leads her to the truck. The shyness that Lily shows towards Momma disappears as she clutches to her hand.

Smiling I open my door and hop in. Rustling in the back lets me know that she's in the truck as her door clicks shut.

“Okay, we need food.” Says Momma as she closes her door. Nodding I pull out of the parking lot. I wonder what type of food that Lily likes. Glancing occasionally in the rear view mirror I see her just sitting their timidly.

“What do you like to eat Lily?” I finally say out loud after saying it in my head a million times.

“Food.” A soft whisper answers from the back. Momma laughs at the revelation.

“My god I think she is your daughter Jake.” Momma says in between laughter. A chuckle escapes me at the truth in the words.

“Alright, food it is.” I say with a smile directed towards the precious cargo in the back.
