Chapter 8

Jake's POV:

Jumping into the truck I can't help but glance at the newly bought saddle sitting in the backseat. It took them around thirty minutes to engrave LS onto it. Smiling I started the truck up. Well it’s time to go home. Hopefully she'll like the gift.

I didn't know what colors to get so it's just black with light pink designs and pink trim around it. I was sure that Eclipse would look good with the colors, but was scared on her opinion.

A feeling of doubt never left me as I drove down the road. What if she didn't like it? So far she was only nervous around me. It's been two weeks already and she has yet to be able to smile like she does in front of me.

I turned down onto the private road that led only to the ranch. A feeling of calmness overcame me. It's always good when I get home from a trip to town.

Something about home just makes all of my problems go away. These last two weeks at the house with Lily have been amazing.

She opened up more every day and got use to the routine. So far she has yet to ride Eclipse, but after today that will change.

Some people may say it was weird how much she opened up since coming here and no longer shower the burden that was on her young shoulders. Maybe just being with people who cared helped her open up.

I don't care what caused her to open up so suddenly, as long as she was happy. That reminds me that a social worker had called yesterday to say they'd be here next week to check up on things.

I'll have to remind Momma the day before so that she can go crazy around the house trying to clean things. Chuckling I drove a little bit faster. I should be able to see the barn and then the house in a few seconds.

Smiling I peer at the place that I call home. Horses grazed in the fields and turned to look at the truck as I drove past.

Workers didn't even glance from their work, they continued to work. The boss was home. So of course they'd continue to work and try to show they have been working all day. If they don’t do their work I wouldn't even bat an eyelash as I fired them and hired another man to do the job.

I don't tolerate slacking on the job. I expect a 100% from my employees. Glancing up towards the house I see a lone figure standing in front of the house looking straight at me. Lily.

I smiled at how she never let her gaze stray from the truck and waited for me to pull up. Maybe she hasn't yet to call me Dad, but she showed that I was her dad on a daily basis.

Nervously I turned off the truck and glanced at the saddle once again. God how I hope she likes it.

Taking a deep breath I jumped out of the truck slamming the door behind me. Her eyes remained on me as I rounded the truck to the other side. Before I opened the door I turned to look at her. I motioned with my hand for her to come here.

Walking slowly towards me she tried to look into the truck at what I was fixing to get out. Here goes, might as well tell her. Feeling more nervous I had to clear my throat a few times to get a sound out.

“Considering how good you've been with Eclipse, and I did promise.” I said unable to come out with more words. Nodding towards the truck with my head I took my hat off my head and ran a hand through my hair nervously.
