Chapter 5

Jake's POV

Staring down at the little girl that slept in my arms made a smile take over my features. After leaving the police station I had taken Lily to a nice restaurant to eat. It had been silent at first, but the comradeship between Momma and Lily had already blossomed.

Dinner consisted of Momma talking to Lily a mile a minute, while Lily just smiled and nodded as her only response. That little girl sure did eat a lot.

Shortly after we had all jumped in the truck Lily had fallen asleep.

Now here I was holding her sleeping form in my arms bringing her to my sister Lena's old room before she moved into a much bigger room down the hall.

Hopefully she had finished cleaning up the room like we had asked her to before leaving to pick up Lily.

Momma ushered me into the room as I tried to not move Lily from her sleep. I gazed around the room in shock at the transformation that Lena had done on it. I think I owe her for this.

I gently ease Lily onto the bed as Momma quickly covers her with the quilt.

I go and turn on the switch to an old lamp that Lena had set up next to the bed. The lamp flickers on casting a small glow around the sleeping girls face.

I don't know if Lily is afraid of the dark, but if she was the light was on. Nodding to Momma to stop fussing with things around the room I usher her out of the room.

Closing the door with a muffled click I finally let out a giant breath at the situation. I had an actual twelve year old daughter and she was sleeping in my house.

Momma stared at me with tears threatening to be let loose at the situation. Giving her a pat on the shoulder I decided that a walk is what I needed.

Lily's POV

Tears streamed down my face as she continued to walk away from me.

“Mom” I yelled after her, but she never turned around. My legs felt like they were glued to the floor as she disappears from my sight.

With a cry I jumped out of the bed. It was just a dream. That's all, it was a dream. My heart thrummed in my chest from the earth shaking dream.

Closing my eyes I slightly started to rock back in forth on the bed. Then it registered in my mind. Why am I in a bed?

In a panic I looked around the foreign room. A pinkish light caught my attention to a lamp turned on to take away the darkness in the room. The light made the nerves I had go away.

I was safe. All I remember is being in the truck and then nothing. I don't remember coming to the room.

I couldn't explain it, but I felt calm about the situation. A numbing pain may still be lingering in my body from the thought of my mom's death, but that pink light made me feel better.

The thought of my mom's death brought tears to my eyes. Sobs wracked my body as I curled into a ball under the covers. After a few minutes a small wine made me peek out from under the covers.

Hearing the wine again I stared at closed door. Listening intently I hear another wine and a slight scratching on the door. Timidly getting up from the bed I inch closer the door.

Taking a deep breath I open the door to find a dog sitting in front of it. Smiling I reached my hand out to pet it on the head, hoping it doesn't bite. The dog wagged its tail as I touched it. I couldn't help but let out a little laugh at its reaction.

The dog stares at me with its warm brown eyes with a certain understanding on why I was crying. Feeling that I had made a new friend I ushered the dong into the room. It wagged its tail at me as it hopped on the bed and made itself comfortable.

Letting out a small giggle at the look of happiness on its face I joined it on the bed. I've always wanted a dog, but was afraid that he would hurt it. Laying under the covers the dog snuggled to me as I petted it.

Feeling my eyes starting to get droopy I petted the dog one last time before I closed my eyes to welcome sleep.
