Chapter 2

Lily’s POV:

I stared at the cream-colored ceiling. The chair I sat in was uncomfortable, but it made the aching in my legs go away. I could only imagine what a sight I must look like.

The police department building was noisy with the ringing of the telephones and officers chatting as they passed each other’s desks.

I hear the chair next to me squeak as an officer sits in it. I just keep looking at the ceiling.

“Hello, my name is Officer Katy and could you tell me your name sweetheart?” A female voice asks.

“Lily.” I whisper.

“Can I have your last name Lily?” I then stare at Officer Katy.

“Lily Sanders.” I reply. Officer Katy nods as she writes it down. I look at her. She has brown hair and when she looks back up at me from the paper, I notice how green her eyes are. I like the color green.

“How old are you Lily?” She asks.

“I just turned twelve.” I tell her.

“Lily why are you here?” Her eyes stare at me with a questioning gaze. Unable to see the shock on her face from my answer I look down at my clenched hands as I reply.

“My mom told me to run.” I say.

“Why did she tell you to run?”

“He got mad again.” I reply in a quiet voice.

“Who is he Lily?” She asks.

“My stepdad.” I reply as I clench my hands tighter together with the anticipation on the next question.

“What does he do when he gets mad?” My heart beats faster at me revealing the truth to someone.

“He beats us…mom knocked him out with a chair when he was…chocking me.” I reach up and caress my bruised neck as I tell her. I hear the noise in the room go away at my revelation.

A chair toppled to the ground as an Officer who is sitting close to me loses his temper. I start shaking as the loud sound resounds in the room.

“It’s okay Lily, your safe, no one here is going to hurt you. Can you sit here while I go do something real quick?” I nod my head.

Looking up I see everyone staring at me as she leaves to go in a room with the name Chief on the door.

Closing my eyes, I try to stop my body from shaking. I know I’m okay, but I don’t like being stared at. I hear the noises around the room start up again as they notice that I don’t like the attention.

“Lily.” I look up at Officer Katy who is now standing next to my chair.

“Can you tell me your address so that we can go check on your mom?” I nod.

“It’s 37547 Cross Road.” I tell her as she writes it down.

“Now Lily we have a doctor coming to look at you and she’ll be here in a minute.”

“Okay.” I say quietly.

“I’m going to stay here with you while she looks at you, and some other Officers will go check on your mom.” I hear chairs move as some Officers get up to go.
