Chapter 7

Jake’s POV:

The remainder of the day I walked Lily around the estate showing her everything that she needed to know. After a while the shyness she started to show to me and every worker we came across went away.

It was amazing to see her smile without watching my face to see if I had a horrible reaction to her being happy. When I looked at her a surge of anger ripped through me at the sight of her bruises.

We ended up sitting on the front porch in silence drinking juice that Momma had brought out for us. She has yet to call me by any name. I don't expect her to call me 'dad' all I ask for is recognition that I am her father and will be for as long as she needs me. I just hope she will always need me.

“Jake. Get your butt in here and help your Momma do these dishes.” Momma says from inside the house. Chuckling I place my cup on the table. Getting up I look at Lily.

“Lily.” I say to get her attention. She turns her head away from looking at her new horse prancing in the corral to look up at me.

“I'll be inside. You're more than welcomed to do what you want. Just don't get inside that corral with the horse until I teach you properly on how to behave around him. If you need help with anything just ask one of the hands or me. I'll call you if I need you.” I tell her.

Nodding her head at me in assurance she once again turns to stare at the horse. I give her a few minutes until she goes and gets closer to that horse I think as I walk into the house to see if there are any dishes to help with.

Momma is sitting at the kitchen table peeling potatoes when I walk in. Lifting an eyebrow I glance at the empty sink.

“Did those dishes happen to walk away?” I ask while I take a seat next to her.

“Thought I'd give the child some time to herself.” She says while smiling as a now unpeeled potato lands in her empty bowl. Grabbing another she looks up at me.

“Be a good child and cut these up into long thin slices? I'm making fries and burgers for lunch.” She tells me while she finishes up her second potato. Getting up I go and grab the knife and cutting board.

I glance out the kitchen window to see Lily sitting up against the corral holding her horse Eclipse. A smile was on her face as she petted him. Smiling myself at the scene I turn away to go and sit at the table. I might as well help get dinner ready.

“She doing good?” Momma asks as she grabs another potato to peel.

“She's petting her horse as we speak. She looks happy. I just hope she'll be okay in the long run.” I say as the sound of cutting takes over the now silent kitchen.

“She'll be fine. She's a fighter. Just give her time.” Momma says as she works on her next potato.

“She is.” I tell her with a smile on my face that's directed towards her.

Lily's POV:

“You know you’re pretty soft.” I tell Eclipse as he nuzzles my hand with his head. Smiling I look up into his gentle eyes. His ears twitch as a light breeze rustles the leaves around him.
