We walked to class silently. I could feel the stares of all the jealous girls around me.

I looked around and saw a glaring Lance. Obviously he didn’t like to see me and Charlie together, but that only made me like Charlie more. He could be creepy at times, but if it got Lance off my back I’d go with just about anything.

“Thanks,” I said.

“You are welcome,” he said. “Do you want to grab a bite to eat at lunch together?”

I looked over at Lance, I was like his eyes were glued to us.

I smiled. “Sure, I’d like that,” I said.

“Great,” he said. “I’ll uh, meet you at your locker.”

“Ok,” I said.

When he still didn’t leave, I said, “Don’t you have a class to get to?”

“Oh, that’s not really an issue,” he told me.

I rolled my eyes, he didn’t think academics were that big of a deal, because his real-estate mommy could just pay off whoever it was that didn’t think his grades were up to par.

“I’ll see you at lunch,” I said, a semi-fake smile pasted onto my face.

“See you.”

I could tell he was attracted to me, but after the discussion I had with Tyler, did I really want that? I wasn’t sure. It was that thought that caused me to avoid my locker when lunch period rolled around.

Amanda and I decided to get lunch off campus, and so we drove to the nearest fast food restaurant.

“So,” Amanda said, “Did you hear that Charlie Prinz broke up with his girlfriend?”

I laughed, “Yeah, actually, I did. It was all my stepsisters could talk about at the dinner table. Apparently, they’re going to try and be his prom date.”

“But there are two of them, he can’t have two dates,” Amanda pointed out.

“You’re telling me!” I said, “I guess they just aren’t smart enough to realize that they’re enemies in this little game they’re playing, and eventually Charlie will have to choose between them.”

“If he chooses one of them at all!” she said. “From the way I’ve seen it, they aren’t even on his radar.”

“Yeah, but unfortunately, I am,” I said.

Amanda choked on her soda. “What?”

“He wanted to eat lunch with me today, I was supposed to meet him at my locker,” I told her.

“Well, what are we doing here for?” Amanda asked rather impatiently.

“We’re here because I didn’t want to eat lunch with him,” I said, stating the obvious.

“Then why didn’t you just tell him no?” she asked.

“Because I decided after I told him yes that I really didn’t want to eat with him.”

“Why not?” Amanda demanded, “Every other girl I know would DIE to have Charlie Prinz ask to eat lunch with her. Heck, half of them beg him already!”

I shrugged and thought back to the conversation I had with Tyler. I was changing, but I wasn’t sure I liked who I was becoming. “It’s complicated,” I finally said.

Amanda nodded, “It’s alright, you don’t have to tell me, I understand.”

She sounded slightly disappointed, but I knew she was sincere. She was letting me be until I was ready.
