Ch. 8

Leila POV

I stood my ground as Veronica came through the door with the supplies. The two locked eyes and she ran into his arms.

"You're alive.", he mumbled to her as they embraced.

"I thought you were dead.", she said and I relaxed as I sat the boxes on the table.

"Guys this is Yoongi, he's a friend of mine. Oh my god I can't believe you're alive!", she cheered and Jungkook walked over to me.

"What's the plan now?",

"We use the supplies to build a fence. Around this house and the one next to it. That way everyone won't be compacted in one 2 bedroom house."

"This won't cover all that ground.", he retorted and I nodded.

"I know, there more back at the store. We made sure it was cleared out before leaving." I said and he nodded.

"Going bsck and forth shouldnt be too hard. We'll keep the windows boarded as that'll be out last line of defense."

"This community is right between the city and the ocean. There was a map in the master bedroom.", Kreme said bringing me to map. We all heard a loud static noise before turning to a small radio sitting in the kitchen.

"The city has undergone ultimate chaos as a deadly virus is sweeping the streets. The military has already issued the entire city quarantined. From the beach to the outskirts on the city. If you are still alive within that perimeter the military has suggested you find someplace safe and remain there until the infection has died out. If you know of someone who is infected, stay as far away from the individual as possible. Nothing much is known about this virus, except that it cause the drive for destruction and a severe case of cannibalism. So again stay as far away from the infected as you can get."

The radio then cut out and I sighed before Yoongi grabbed some boards. "We have to hurry."

"Jungkook come with me to check this next house. Kreme set up a line so they know where the fences go.", I ordered and she nodded.

Jungkook follows behind me out the front door as we wall casually to the next house. I get up to the porch and notice the front door is broken in. I turned to Jungkook who was looking off in the other direction with a guilty expression.

"You're fixing this.", I said and he nodded in shame. We walked inside where there was a light thumping noise. We checked throughout the bottom floor first where we found canned foods, maps, radios, and a set of car keys.

"Lets check upstairs.", he said and I drew my gun. I crept upstairs where the noise was coming from and pushed into the guest bedroom. On the bed, there was a large duffle bag and a single infected chained to the bed post.

"I got her.", Jungkook said before plunging a knife in her head.

"Well have to dump the bodies. Help me with this.", I said going to one end of the bag as Jungkook went to the other end. We unzipped the bag with wide eyes. I had a huge grin on my face as I scanned the many weapons inside the bag.

"Assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, pistols, submachine guns. Jungkook we just hit the jackpot.", I laughed and he couldn't contain his grin.

"Thank God for apocalyptic believers.", I said.

"Why don't we go check out the wheels?", he asked and we rushed to the garage. We opened the door to be greeted with a Hummer H3. I ran a hand through my hair before checking the interior.

"Hey more guns.", I said and Jungkook jumped like a child.

"I drive this first.", I quickly said and Jungkook pouted. "No way I found the keys."

"Rock, paper, scissors?" We both held out a fist before going on 3.

"Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!", I smirked as my rock beat his scissors. "Maybe next time kid."

"I'm staying in this house.", I laughed as we have each other a high five. We walked back outside to see Kreme laying down a line in front of the house.

"There! This is our layout.", she smiled and I nodded. Day after day we sort at least 15 hours building the fence. Making runs back and forth from the store became more or a morning routine than a job. I was currently up on a watch tower Yoongi built. It wasn't a tower but much more of a platform by the gate.

The fence was coming along great and 10 days later I can definitely say that were almost finished. The gates were built from the wood we found in the store and metal fences. A few infected here and there but no serious threat. I frowned up as I saw something walking towards us.

"Guys!" I climbed down the ladder and grabbed a pistol before I got Jungkook to open the gate. Yoongi and I walked up to see that it was a woman, covered in blood and dirt.

"Are you hurt?", I asked and she shook her head. "Alone?" A nod. Yoongi scanned the area before tapping my shoulder. I turned to see a few infected, but they hadn't noticed is yet.

"Well finish this inside, come on quickly.", I said grabbing her hand and bringing her inside the gate. Jungkook closed and locked the gate behind us and I brought her inside one of the houses.

"What's your name?"

"Terry."

"Where did you come from Terry?", I asked as I took notice of her expecting state.

"From the city. There were many of us but soon everyone started to die. Then they turned. My friend MoonMi, her boyfriend Minho and myself were the only survivors I think. But we got separated. I just had to get out of that city. MoonMi is expecting as well. But I'm further along than she is. I didn't want a baby, I didn't even want to have sex.", she said starting to cry.

Kreme, Veronica and I all sat around her giving comforting words. "Hey get out for a sec." Yoongi nodded before walking out and I let the woman cry on my shoulder. She stoped crying before a hand went to her stomach and a groan left her lips.

"Why now?", she said before falling back on the bed.

"She's in labor! Kreme get me a towel and some warm water if you can.", I said moving to pull her pants and underwear down.

"The baby is already crowning, I need to push now alright. Leila get ready to grab the baby.", Veronica said as I held her hand.

"I'm not this kind of doctor.", I muttered in fear and she held my arm.

"You got this. Come on Terry, you can do it.", Veronica said and Terry began to yell out while pushing as hard as she could. Kreme came back with a bucket and 2 towels. Soon enough a faint cry was heard and I wrapped the newborn in a small towel before showing Terry. She has tears in her eyes but still held a happy smile as she looked over her baby girl.

"You're so beautiful. A miracle to be born at a time like this.", she said with a weak tone.

"Take care of her for me.", Terry sobbed before her eyes fluttered shut. Veronica checked her pulse as I laid the crying newborn on the bed.

"Leila?"

I stood up with wide eyes before dashing outside to our makeshift armory. I snatched my crossbow, a switchblade and a pistol. I ran to the Hummer, keys in hand as Jungkook started at me with a confused expression. "Open the gate!"

"LEILA!", Kreme shouted as I drove out the gate and into the street.

"Leave her be. Everyone has their breaking point and this is hers. Come help me get the baby cleaned.", Veronica said and Kreme ran inside while Jungkook and Yoongi stood at the gate, watching me drive away.
