Ch. 6

Leila POV

I held my gaze on the road ahead of me as Kreme was asleep beside me. Jungkook still sat awake in the back as well as our little friend still unconscious.

"So what do you do? For a living?", he asked and I shrugged.

"I'm a simple doctor. Worked at the hospital.", I answered and he chuckled.

"There's more to it than that. No simple doctor fights the way you did back there.", he retorted and I smirked. "You were trained to fight like that."

"You're right kid. I was trained to fight like that. Where, I can't tell you.", I commented and he shook his head before a slight jerk caught my eye. Veronica kicked Jungkook and I slammed on brakes before turning around, holding her at gunpoint.

"I suggest you sit still back here or do you suggest I snap the other wrist?", I said and she tucked herself into the corner of her seat. I adjusted in my seat before letting out a sigh. Veronica sounded as if she was trying to speak and I groaned before turning to Jungkook and he removed the tape.

"What are you planning to do with me?", she questioned and I frowned.

"Save your life. You go back you're dead remember?", I replied and she stared at me with a look of disbelief.

"But I tried to kill you."

"You weren't acting on plain instinct. You were being threatened and followed directions.", I said and she fought back tears.

"I should've just stay on campus. At least there I had a door to separate me and the war zone in the outside world.", she told us.

"I just wanted to get through school. Nothing else. But then this shit happened and fucked up everything.", she continued trying not to cry.

"I've killed people. Innocent people who were just trying to get by. All to save my own ass."

"If it had been me. I would be died fighting. They wouldn't take me down without a fight. Nor would they have scared me into helping them.", I said pulling off towards a nearby house.

"Why'd we stop?", Kreme asked.

"To give Veronica a choice. You can get out here, and survive on your own. Or you can stay with us. This may not be the best idea but I'm trying to help you out here.", I explained and she stared up at me. I unlocked the door and she rested her hand on the handle before looking at everyone. She retracted her hand and sat quietly before mumbling a single thank you. I nodded before pulling off again.

"There's a nearby grocery store. Maybe it's not completely empty.", I said aloud and everyone exchange looks. "We have to be sure."

I continued to drive before the gas light came on. "Fuck." I drove past the store and on to some nearby community with individual houses.

"Kreme I'm going to drop you two off here. Take everything we have left inside.", I stated and she scoffed.

"I'm not stay alone with her.", she said pointing her thumb at Veronica and I rolled my eyes. "You and Jungkook."

"That'll work.", she said crossing her arms. The pair got out and I turned to Veronica.

"You and I will check the grocery store. And find a gas station.", I said watching the two approached the front door. After a few minutes the two come out with the thumbs up and I pulled up so they could em put the car.

"Alright you two know the drill. Barricade the door, no one comes in or out.", I stated and they nodded as they went inside, closing the door behind them.

"Why are we checking the grocery store if you still have supplies?", Veronica asked.

"Looks like we'll be staying here for awhile. It's a 2 their place, upstairs and downstairs. We can probably barricade the fence to further fortify the place. For that we need wood, it's not just a grocery store.", I explained and she nodded.

I put the car in reverse and did a 3 point turn making my way back to the store. Once we arrived I took notice of the empty lot.

"Nothing here but abandoned cars. Where the hell is everyone?", I questioned.

"Maybe they already left. It has been a few days since the epidemic started.", Veronica said and I shook my head.

"Maybe but there's only one way to go. We came from the south, which has nothing but open ocean. The only way to get out of the city, is to go through the city. But trying to flee to the center of town is not the best idea.", I pointed out and she scanned the area, realization hitting her.

"There's someone inside.", she mumbled and I turned my head to the entrance.

"There's nothing."

"Someone or something moved in there. I'm not kidding.", she said and I grabbed my crossbow before passing her a pistol.

"Can I trust you with this?", I asked and she nodded. I got out to undo her restraints before the two of us moved towards the entrance. Weapons ready, the automatic doors opened to reveal a half ransacked store. I scanned the area before moving to grab two boxes.

"Tale this and fill it up with anything you can find. Water, food, medical supplies. I'm going to look for things for the fence.", I ordered and she nodded. "And be careful."

I turned to walk down the aisle with my weapon ready as I reached for so barb wire and wooden boards. I heard a faint clank and looked up towards the end of the aisle. I silently made my way to the end and peeked around to see Veronica.

"Shit, you scared me.", I said and she laughed.

"Sorry, I was just-", a loud thump cut her off and we both aimed to the source of the noise. There stood a single infected, I moved to kill it before it snapped his head in my direction. His eyes were bloodshot and unfocused. I narrowed my eyes before waving my hand in front of me. The infected didn't move an inch until it kicked a tin can across the floor. It's body turned to the can and swung out hitting air. I turned to Veronica with a gaze that said I have a plan.

I picked up a nearby bottle as quietly as I could before chucking it many aisles down. The infected screeched as it took off down the aisles. I backed up towards veronica and sighed.

"This thing is diferent from the others we've come across. It's blind and fast.", I whispered. "Stay quiet."

We continued grabbing what we needed for a few more minutes before another thump sounded. Only this one was different.

"What was that?", Veronica asked and I shrugged. A few seconds of silence later, the infected we saw earlier was flung to the back of the store into the wall. We stood with wide eyes and heavy footsteps echoed throughout the store. I turned to see the security room and I yanked Veronica behind me.

I shut the door softly and turned the lock before dashing to the camera system. I flipped through each camera until I saw something turning the corner by the fruits. I clicked once more and we saw something hunched over a corpse. It was big. It's arms and chest were swollen contrasting from its legs.

"What the fuck is that?", Veronica cursed.
