As well as Murdoc was protecting 2-D. This theory is that The Boogieman wasn't trying to kill Murdoc, or collect his soul. Instead, he was trying to ruin his life. I don't have too much to support this theory.

But notice how The Boogieman was the one who clearly gassed 2-D in the Plastic Beach 2-D ident? Yet, in the game, 2-D puts the blame on Murdoc for gassing him. Yet, there was no Murdoc present. Also, in the scrapped storyboards of how some of the collaborators ended up on Plastic Beach, it clearly shows Cyborg Noodle holding up a gun to Bobby Womack's head. And that's how she/they made Bobby come along.

And it makes sense that Murdoc would make Cyborg Noodle kidnap the collaborators, since she is his servant. But why did the Boogieman gas 2-D? I don't think Murdoc and the Boogieman were working together at the time. Because why would they hate each other as soon as the phase starts?

No, Murdoc wasn't even going to kidnap 2-D. The Boogieman was gassing 2-D, because he had planned on killing 2-D. It's possible that Murdoc had ruined The Boogieman's life, and that The Boogieman was going to ruin Murdoc's life in return. And by doing so, taking away everything and everyone that Murdoc loves.

Murdoc or Cyborg Noodle may have been at 2-D's house at the right time, and saved him from the Boogieman. And to keep 2-D safe from the Boogieman and not doing anything rash, Murdoc lied to 2-D by saying that he was the one that kidnapped him for the album. He has the whale watch 2-D so that 2-D doesn't try to run away, and well....Get killed by The Boogieman. So, Murdoc can keep a watch of 2-D.
