It's the other way around.

Lots of fans say that Murdoc made a deal with the Boogieman, and he didn't pay up to it, and that's why The Boogieman is after Murdoc. But in the Rhinestone Eyes music video, in the flashback sequence, it looked like the other way around.

While the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse ride off, we see a Boogieman left behind on a donkey. In fact, he looks pretty pitiful. Murdoc then came along, he was the one to hold out his hand to the Boogieman. And he had a wicked grin on his face. Murdoc had also mentioned being greater than Satan.

So it was possible that The Boogieman made a deal with Murdoc many years ago. But, Murdoc either ripped The Boogieman off, or he used him.

And that's why The Boogieman is after Murdoc, because he's out for revenge. And perhaps The Boogieman had became more powerful throughout the years.

What was the deal? Who knows, Plastic Beach is full of unanswered questions.

The Boogieman is either Hannibal, or Murdoc's dark side. These are already theories that are swarming around the internet.

Since The Evangelist is green, with claws. And her/their design (here) is basically white version of the Boogieman. If Hannibal is The Boogieman, it's possible that Murdoc had (accidentally or intentionally) ruined Hannibal's life, supposedly with the deal that Hannibal made with Murdoc as mentioned above. Or, Hannibal is jealous of his brother and wants to become more powerful than he is.

Or, The Boogieman represents Murdoc's dark side. And that is why the Boogieman gassed 2-D. Because it was actually Murdoc who gassed 2-D all along. But, The Boogieman was representing the evil of Murdoc, the evil that Murdoc does to 2-D.

And Murdoc was supposed to defeat the Boogieman in Phase 3, as to finally defeat his inner demons.
